Guest guest
Unfortunately "Rabbit Proof Fence" is based on real facts, I'm ashamed to admit as an Australian. We have a lot to answer to for what we have done to our Aborigines. But I don't know what the solution is in this day and age. I think all countries struggle with this problem. RobynChristy wrote: I saw a preview for it but I haven't seen the movie. I can't do sad movies anymore because it sticks with me for too long and I'm already having trouble dealing with "reality" these days. I did screw up and I went to see The Notebook with my SIL and a friend and . I could hardly hear the movie over all the snorts and sniffles. And most of them were from me! I haven't cried during a movie since I saw Fantasia when I was 5! LOL What a movie. If you haven't seen that one, go! Book Have any of you seen the movie Rabbit-Proof Fence or read the book....I saw the movie on Encore the other night and it still sticks with me...It centers around three aboriginine girls who were taken from their mothers and put at the River Camp...They called them aboriginine casts, which meant half breeds....This is a true story and very intense....At the end of the movie they showed the two that were still living and one of them tells what happened later.....The book is written by one of their daughters....I highly recommend the movie and the book, altho I can't read any more, it has to be good.....It's sad and another autrasity against humans..... Guest guest
Robyn....It's no different that what we did to the slaves and the American Indians....At least Australia changed the law in 1979 so this couldn't go on....Altho you and I had nothing to do with the autrasities, we still feel the shame for what our countries were allowed to do....Hopefully things will keep changing for the better and our grandchildren won't feel the shame we still do.....Pam Book Have any of you seen the movie Rabbit-Proof Fence or read the book....I saw the movie on Encore the other night and it still sticks with me...It centers around three aboriginine girls who were taken from their mothers and put at the River Camp...They called them aboriginine casts, which meant half breeds....This is a true story and very intense....At the end of the movie they showed the two that were still living and one of them tells what happened later.....The book is written by one of their daughters....I highly recommend the movie and the book, altho I can't read any more, it has to be good.....It's sad and another autrasity against humans..... Guest guest
I'm just ashamed to think that it took until 1979 to stop this practice! I also don't know what we do now to help the Aborigines. It seems like we have gone to the opposite extreme now by making them "welfare dependent" and this is just as bad. I wish there was an answer. Guest guest
We've done the same here, except with the American Indian we give them money every year for being Indian....You can be as little as 1/8 Indian and get all kinds of things, as long as your ancestors are listed on the Indian roles.....I agree, making them welfare dependent is not the answer....They've made it too easy for so many in this country and it costs us, as tax payers.... Guest guest
Pam, We've done the same over here. We give them pensions to live on every fortnight and there is no incentive to work. They also get funding for everything you could think of & it's the same as over there - you only have to be a small part aboriginal. I've met some really wonderful Aborigines but I know we have damaged them as a general population with our "welfare state" mentality. It also makes much of the rest of the population resent them because they don't understand the quandry they are in.
