I don't know if I have a touch of the flu or not but, my stomach has been cramping like crazy!!! Plus having almost constant diarrhea on top of that. No matter what I drink or eat, it comes out as fast as it goes in. Talk about the green apple two step? I have been taking Kaopectac and, Pepto Bismo like crazy with no help. All I can do is to curl up in a ball to keep my tummy from cramping so bad. I'm not throwing up at all for I do get hungry. I haven't been eating any fatty foods to get it started. Is there anything else I can try to stop the runs? Hate to be so gross but, the diarrhea is blackish in color too. My girlfriend Connie got me some Gatorade to keep me from dehydrating, thank God but, no matter if my tummy is empty or full, it still cramps like crazy. Any suggestions?? Guest guest Posted February 9, 2004 Report Share Posted February 9, 2004 Trud - I'll see if I can find the link with the details but if your Kaopectate and Pepto are both relatively new, I wonder if it could be because the have both changed their ingredients within the past year. There was something in there that the govenment required be changed - and whatever the new formula is I know they are no longer advised for use on dogs or cats without careful monitoring. Wonder if perhaps you are having reaction to the "new stuff" that is dangerous for dogs and cats... Anyway - if you have any aspirin sensitivities, it could also apply to you. Or if kaopectate has worked for you in the past it may be the clay (now eliminated) is what "glued" things together... Somewhere (another veterinary site <g>) I also read that if the aspirin causes sensitivity it will cause the stomach to bleed - and that will turn the animal's stool black. Previously, the product contained attapulgite, an inert clay aluminum. The original kaolin pectin formula of Kaopectate was replaced by the attapulgite formula in caplets in 1984, and liquid attapulgite formulations were first introduced in 1989.The attapulgite formulation of Kaopectate caplets may still be available. According to a Pfizer Animal Health spokesman, the new formulation of all liquid forms of Kaopectate began shipping in December 2002. Reformulated caplets are scheduled to begin shipping no later than April 2004.Though it is an extralabel use, for decades, veterinarians have recommended Kaopectate to treat diarrhea in cats and dogs, particularly for clients who call after hours or are unwilling or unable to get immediate veterinary care, said Dr. Cory Langston, a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Clinical Pharmacology and a member of the AVMA Council on Biologic and Therapeutic Agents.
