Guest guest Posted November 27, 2005 Report Posted November 27, 2005 My name is Lindy and I am on the insulin Pump been diabetic for 19 plus years. Hubby is army so right now we are at Ft knox KY but moving to Ft Bliss TX Hi..my name is Christie...I am new member. I have been foramlly diagnosed with Diabetes for a few months now. But, had been termed " glucose intolerant " for several years, and had gestational diabetes with both my pregnancies, so I figured it was just a matter of time before being diagnosed. I am on oral meds, Metformin 500mg twice a day. Working well for me now. Where is everyone from? Quote
Guest guest Posted November 28, 2005 Report Posted November 28, 2005 Hi Christie, I was diagnosed just 3 years ago, but I suspect I had the disease for years before. I was one of those people who, when I needed to go to sleep on a Sunday night so that I would be alert on Monday morning, would simply eat a bowl of ice cream. I'd nod off a few minutes later. And if the first thing I ate in the morning was something starchy or sweet, I'd get very weak and jittery almost immediately afterwards. But I managed to ignore these symptoms (I didn't know what they were symptoms of!) until I got very ill one day at work, told my boss that I wasn't feeling well and was going home. On the way to my house, I debated whether to turn off and go to the hospital or to go home and try to sleep. I felt so very tired even though I'd slept well the night before. At the last moment I opted for the hospital. Shortly after arriving I became very thirsty and drank several glasses of water which I shortly thereafter regurgitated and began undergoing dry heaves. Although I didn't know it (some of you no doubt do) I was in the throes of ketoacidosis. They immediately admitted me and told me that a diabetic such as myself should not have waited so long to come to the hospital. They were surprised when I told them I had no idea that I was diabetic. The doctor told me that it been very lucky for me that I had decided to come to the hospital rather than going home to sleep. He said the chances were very good that I would never have awakened. He diagnosed me as a LADA Type 1 but I'm pretty sure that I'm Type 2. I read Dr. Bernstein's and Gretchen Becker's books, acquainted myself with Rick (now ) Mendosa's web site and learned as much as I could about diabetes. But there is so much to learn! I suspect that, before it's all over, there will be several breakthroughs made that will cause some very bright researchers to say, " Why didn't we think of that before? " and " I can't understand why we never thought to explore that avenue of research. " But that's how science progresses. I believe it was Isaac Asimov who said something like, " The greatest scientific discoveries are not usually attended by shouts of 'Eureka!', rather they are usually greeted with, 'Gee, that's funny.' " Anyway, as to where I'm from -- I live in Heidelberg, Germany. I'm an expatriate American who was born and raised in Seattle and its suburbs. Please note that the word expatriate is not necessarily synonymous with " ex-patriot. " In my case, it simply means that I reside in a foreign country, not that I have renounced my native land. My, how I do ramble on. Bad habit of mine, although I'm normally just a lurker on this list. Must be that it's 3:00 AM here. Anyway, welcome! Regards, Christie wrote: > Hi..my name is Christie...I am new member. I have been foramlly > diagnosed with Diabetes for a few months now. Guest guest Posted November 29, 2005 Report Posted November 29, 2005 I'm in Saint , MN and had my 3 month check-up today after being diagnosed at the age of 42 with Type 2 in August with a blood sugars over 280 and an A1C of 9.3. Today my A1C was 6.5, my blood sugars are regularly between 95 and 125, and I've lost 35 lbs. by switching to a low-carb diet and walking for 45 minutes three or four times a week. I know everyone's mileage may vary, but maybe my short-term success can give someone else a little hope in achieving some control over this thing. - T. http://www.houleweb.com/ Quote

Guest guest Posted November 29, 2005 Report Posted November 29, 2005 What exactly is a brittle diabetic? Sandy Re: where is everyone from? Hi, I'm Sharon from Victorville, CA. Type I insulin dependent insulin resistant brittle diabetic for 31 years. I am 43 as of last week. Quote
Guest guest Posted November 29, 2005 Report Posted November 29, 2005 Hi , Your story sounds much like my own. I was diagnosed a few weeks ago at age 43 with a fasting BS of 280 and an A1c of 10.1 (yes I freaked when I saw that!) I am not overweight and was eating extremely well before this so not real sure why I got it (again I attibute it to stress/lack of exercise and a predisposition) - but in the last few weeks, I'm bringing my sugars way down. I truly hope my A1c in 3 months looks as good as yours~ Congrats on the 35 pound loss - that is fantastic! Sandy in PA Re: where is everyone from? Guest guest Posted November 29, 2005 Report Posted November 29, 2005 Hi Sandy--there is only one simple way to describe " brittle " diabetic. No matter what I do (good or bad) my sugar is basically uncontrollable. I go from one extreme to the next. I wake up and my sugar is sometimes over 600 and after doing what I need to do to bring it down it will sometimes bottom out at maybe 30 or less. It isn't always like that but most of the time. It is really really tricky to treat properly. Sharon in CA Re: where is everyone from? Hi, I'm Sharon from Victorville, CA. Type I insulin dependent insulin resistant brittle diabetic for 31 years. Guest guest Posted November 29, 2005 Report Posted November 29, 2005 Hi Sharon, I thought that was probably what it was but thought I would ask to make sure. That really stinks to have something you are doing everything to correct and your body won't cooperate. I am very thankful that I'm able to control mine at this time. Sandy Re: where is everyone from? Hi Sandy--there is only one simple way to describe " brittle " diabetic. No matter what I do (good or bad) my sugar is basically uncontrollable. Quote

Guest guest Posted November 29, 2005 Report Posted November 29, 2005 I live in close proximity to *Houston, Texas*. I am 43 years old, diagnosed Type 2 on 11/29/01. Wow! Just realized as I typed the date, that today is my 4-year anniversary! WooHooo! Four years ago today, I received my wake-up call, and thankful every day. Today, I am the healthiest I can ever remember being. . . .thanks to Diabetes. Sounds ironic, doesn't it? I continue to control it with diet, exercise, and a positive outlook. I started out with 1,000mg of Glucophage. I have lost a total of 75 pounds over the past 4 years. I would like to lose maybe another 15. Four months after diagnosis, I was relieved of meds. Diabetes is the best thing that ever happened to me. Well, almost! :-) Rhonda Y. Quote
Guest guest Posted November 29, 2005 Report Posted November 29, 2005 I live close to Houston, Tx, 33 years old and diagnosed T2 in August of this year. Still getting my feet wet, struggling to find the right foods and regimine my body will agree to but making progress. I've lost 24 lbs since being diagnosed and will be loosing more. I have to say this part feels good. I'm not focusing on loosing weight, I'm focusing on eating right and trying to make my BS excellent so it feels like the weight loss is a bonus reward for working at it. I take insulin, metformin and ambryl as well. Tracey --------------------------------- Yahoo! Music Unlimited - Access over 1 million songs. Try it free. Quote
