Guest guest
Just want to thank you all for the encouragment. Sorry I had such a pity party. I will say I hate to talk about my daughters CI becuase there are so many negative attitudes out there, I cringe when I say, " no it is not helping her, but it is not the CI's fault!! " I am so glad that so many of your children are able to take advantage of the wonderful new technologies out there. Regarding the signing discussion, although Anya is not yet reading (she does do some fingerspelling) her use of tenses, prefixes and endings continues to amaze me. And I am loving that she is using multiple meaning words! For those of you that have chosen ASL, I am glad it is working for you. I know ASL (am finishing up my interpreter training) and I am always being told that deaf children will never be able to understand multiple meaning words from SEE (how can you use the same sign for your nose running and the car running? Or put a blanket over the baby, the movie is over.) But when I see my daughter using these words correctly and spontaneously, I just want to cheer. She gets it!! English is her language and it is so cool to see it working for her. She usually says things are 'done' (videos etc) the other day she signed that her video was over. I just stared and signed " what? " she signed back " over, you know, done! " I just laughed. She thought I was so stupid for not getting it, I was just so surprised! RE: Helen Keller, I have never heard that she was post-lingual.. but when I have inquired about the techniques used I have been told that they are pretty much lost. Because of the technologies, there has been no need for them. sigh... and along comes Anya... Again, thanks for all the kind words and blessing to all of you and your families!
