Guest guest
, I cannot comment on menopause as I am not there yet. But a few things that did change for me, were that I had the most painful cramping every month since the first period I ever had. My cycles were long and heavy, often 8 or 9 days and the first four putting me in bed with painful cramps. Following amalgam removal and that period right after it, I now have shorter periods that are lighter, and almost no cramps at all! Also noticed breast soreness was really bothersome each month, and that too is gone. My periods are brought on early by chelation rounds sometimes, they are not any longer or heavier though. Just early. The painful cramping has continued to be gone and this is since May. So I dont anticipate it comming back. I also noticed that my PMS is far less than it was before removal and seems to be improving with chelation. Hope this helps some in your side line research! I too had cysts since a teen, but don't seem to now. > > I'd be interested in hearing more from other women about > menstrual changes that have occured during chelation. > Especially interested in long-term changes, after a year > or more. > > I noticed when I first started chelating (for a few months, > I guess), that if I was anywhere close to the end of my > cycle (as long as a week, I'd say), starting a round would > bring on my period. Guest guest
, I had experienced menopause-like symptoms shortly after I had my amalgams removed in Sept. (I posted a couple of weeks ago about missing my period). My period came a week after removal (which was a week early!) and since then my period just stopped (not even spotting). I also experienced daily hot flashes about a month ago, but those were gone after 2 weeks or so. I was (and still am) high on copper (380 on DDI hair test) and thought it had something to do with that. I was getting worried because I never missed my period. I was always regular and my periods were short and light. I'm 34. I just started my first round this week (I'm on my second day) and I would also be interested in hearing from women with similar menstrual changes. I'm hoping my period will eventually return, as I progress with chelation. I realize getting stressed out about it isn't doing me any good at this point. Thank you for bringing up this topic for discussion. I remember searching the archives and AI for answers on how Hg affects menstruation and couldn't find much info. I'm somewhat relieved to know that I'm not the only one going through these changes. Be well, menstrual changes during chelation I'd be interested in hearing more from other women about menstrual changes that have occured during chelation. Especially interested in long-term changes, after a year or more. I noticed when I first started chelating (for a few months, I guess), that if I was anywhere close to the end of my cycle (as long as a week, I'd say), starting a round would bring on my period. At this point, it seems like I have stopped having periods (approaching 3 months without a period, although my hot flashes have improved somewhat so who knows). My hormone levels are menopausal. Just curious if anyone is having similar experiences. (I was having irregular cycles and hot flashes before starting chelation, so it is certainly possible this would be happening whether I had chelated or not.) --

Usually I am like clock work. The first few days there is just spotting and all the sensations in the ovaries you described. In 4 or 5 days it becomes a full blown period. It is more painful than is normal. Because of this reaction to DMSA I have developed a system of chelation that reduces the DMSA and stresses ALA. To be more specific, I chelate in one week on and one week off blocks. I do 4 days on ALA (50 mg every 3 hours) and then add in 25 mg DMSA per dose in the last three days. The final 12 hours I do only DMSA to reduce post round symptoms (Was that confusing or what?) I'd be curious if anyone else finds that there is a difference between DMSA and ALA for inducing periods. If it is an elimination reaction that gets rid of mercury it might be a good thing. I am always slow to label uncomfortable symptoms as healing responses, though. Sorry I can't give you a long term report. I've only been chelating since August 2006. Guest guest
> > I'd be interested in hearing more from other women about > menstrual changes that have occured during chelation. I've been chelating for about 20 months now. 63 rounds of DMSA, about half with ALA. Now 5 days into my 1st round of DMPS. I have not had a period in about 2 months. I'm 50. I had had a long, heavy period very regularly for pretty much my whole adult life. In September, with stress around the time of my father's death and starting Iodoral, I had a period start within 11 days of the previous one. Starting Armour made my periods much lighter and shorter and the discharge much brighter red. (Andy talks about this in AI.) I have never had much cramping. My major pre-menstrual symptom has been a dip in my immunity - much more likely to get boils, blepharitis, sinus infections, etc right before my period. I used to have a lot a sugar and chocolate cravings before my period, but I haven't indulged in those in quite a while. My lack of PMS is surprising in light of my very high hair copper for at least 4 years. So, in summary, chelation never seemed to do much to my period. Armour and Iodoral made changes. Maybe chelation affected me long term though, since I seemingly now no longer have periods. Given my age it is hard to tell whether chelation or just normal menopause caused that. I've also lost maybe 40 lbs. over the time I've been chelating, so that might have affected things, too. I am having very bothersome night sweats. I think my adrenals are still pretty stressed. My ASI in May showed me stage 7. Acetyl L-carnitine and Seriphos seem to help a little. I have had obstructive sleep apnea diagnosed and am in the process of starting treatment (probably CPAP). According to the drs. at the Stanford Sleep Disorders Clinic, treating sleep apnea might help a lot with adrenal problems. We'll see. W. Hopefully this means I don't really need Armour (despite test results that make me borderline hypo), since I have always had fairly bright red menstrual blood. I always had one day of (very) heavy bleeding and one or two days of light bleeding until a couple of years ago when they got much lighter. > I have never had much cramping. For me it was more minor, like sore throats, mouth sores, cuts that didn't seem to heal. Then I would get my period and everything would clear up. > have a lot a sugar and chocolate cravings before my period, but I > haven't indulged in those in quite a while. I had *radical* food cravings - salt and sugar and, well, just about anything. I was an overeater for many years, and I would eat incredible amounts of food in the latter half of my cycle. And I weighed about 15-20 pounds less than I do now. I should have weighed about 300 pounds for the amount of food I ate back then. I also had horrible, horrible breast pain, soreness, and swelling and fibrocystic issues. I had a lump removed from my breast when I was 20 (a cluster of cysts). Also had a lot of water retention. My PMS was very bad. I believe now it would be diagnosed as premenstrual dysphoric disorder. It was pretty frightening at times. A little bit like having a split personality. I am still a bit like this even though I seem to have stopped cycling, so I guess it was not just hormones. > My lack of PMS is surprising in light of my very high hair copper for > at least 4 years. Yes, it sure is. I seem to fit the copper toxicity picture better than you do. But my hair copper is very normal, RBC copper is low. Even looking at Dr. 's " hidden copper " indicators, I don't fit. > So, in summary, chelation never seemed to do much to my period. > Armour and Iodoral made changes. According to the drs. at the Stanford > Sleep Disorders Clinic, treating sleep apnea might help a lot with > adrenal problems. We'll see. That seems like a good bet. A sleep disorder would keep you from having restful sleep, and thus you would not have a healthy sympathetic/parasympathetic balance - meaning inadequate rest for the adrenals. It may not be all you need, but sounds like it could be very helpful. I am finding 5htp is helpful with nighttime hot flashes. I also have taken an herbal product for a couple of years now - it has black cohosh, dong quai, vitex, a couple other herbs. (Women's Menocaps by Wise Woman Herbals). I'm about to start progesterone cream again - another thing that tends to make me hyper, but I think I have to give it another try. Good luck with the CPAP! --

Now 5 days into my 1st round of DMPS. > > > --- Wow, that's a long time chelating. Can you share what sort of > improvements you've experienced? There aren't many reports here to > review. I had fatigue and joint pain since the early 90's prior to chelation. These were probably due to having amalgams replaced with no precautions. I had some minor peripheral neuropathy. I was very light, sound and fragrance sensitive. Just starting the recommended supplements helped enormously. Probably the biggest help was zinc, since I have high hair copper. SAMe, phosphatidyl choline and digestive enzymes were all very helpful, too. The first few rounds of DMSA chelation made me feel like a great weight was lifted. It took awhile to get up to the right amounts of minerals (especially magnesium and zinc), but I felt much more energetic, mentally with it, less joint pain, etc. I added in ALA after 6 rounds. ALA made me feel absolutely great. I mean it was like heroin or something. This was possibly because I have borderline low plasma cysteine. I followed Andy's supplement and diet advice to try to reduce my hair copper, but it never really came down. Feeling good lasted maybe 7-8 months. I am a fast metabolizer, so I had to dose 9 times a day including 11pm, 2am, 5am and 8am. I am also chelating my autistic child, so I had to get up all those times to dose her, too. I got pretty worn down. Also, during the time that I've been chelating both of my parents died. With all these stresses (and the stress that ALA was causing me to retain copper when I was already high), my adrenals and thyroid needed help. I started Armour and Cortef in May and that got rid of a lot of the day to day joint pains and helped with fatigue. I started Iodoral in September and could then exercise without pain. (Prior to that exercise left me with a couple of days of pain.) I haven't done much ALA in the past couple of months because of the copper problem. wants me to do two months of just DMPS to see if that helps with copper. (I'm dubious since I excrete copper in my stool. Since the amount excreted in stool is something like 24 times what comes out in the urine, using DMPS to increase urinary excretion is not likely to have mucch of an effect.) I'm pretty tired from getting used to a new schedule and chelator. I started out at every 8 hours with DMPS, but find that every 6 hours is what I need. I've now gotten up at 2:30 am for 5 nights in a row. That, along with my sleep apnea, has left me pretty tired. Overall, I'd say chelation has helped with joint pain, fatigue, mental alertness, maybe depression. I have lost maybe 40 pounds since starting chelation, which I really needed to do. It is hard to separate out the effects of chelation from supplementation, thryoid and adrenal support, increasing my iron (in May my ferritin was 11), increasing vit D (which I was borderline low in), etc. I just keep finding more and more health issues: lately thyroid nodules and sleep apnea. Something I've done (losing weight, supplements, chelation?) has lowered my cholesterol from mildly elevated to normal and brought my C-reactive protein from 7 to 2.5. I think I'm less light and sound sensitive. I can stand to be around chlorine a bit now, but swimming in a chlorinated pool is very enervating. I still have a lot of trouble understanding speech in a noisy environment. My blood pressure is up. I think I am slightly hyperthyroid right now. I got up to 4 1/4 grains of Armour in October. I've been lowering ever since. Down to 2 3/4 now. It is hard to keep at the right levels of Armour and Cortef with my ferritin rising, various stresses and illnesses and maybe chelation helping to clear out my thyroid and adrenals. Unless I can get my copper under control, however, I can't see that I will ever be able to complete chelation with ALA. My hair copper is currently 87. Sorry this is kind of disorganized. I need to take a nap. W.
Guest guest
Hi , good topic, I'll make some comments below. I had an ablation done last May, so my experiences since then are probably not as relevant.----------Jackie In frequent-dose-chelation , wrote: I'd be interested in hearing more from other women about menstrual changes that have occured during chelation. Especially interested in long-term changes, after a year or more. -------------I have been chelating for about 18 months, only with DMSA, the majority of that time at 12.5 and 16mg. My periods had been heavy and painful and lasted about 6-7 days, and were regular, except more like 30-some days in between, and were like this for many years, as long as I wasn't on birth control pills. I had PMS and much more anxiety the week or so before my period when I wasn't on Zoloft. The anxiety was bad enough that many times I considered going back on Zoloft because of it, but then it would pass. As I started eating better and taking supplements in preparation for amalgam removal, I think things got a little better. Alot of things got better after amalgam removal, including anxiety and PMS. But my periods were still heavy, long, painful, and regular. Maybe slight improvements, but no huge changes.----------Jackie I noticed when I first started chelating (for a few months, I guess), that if I was anywhere close to the end of my cycle (as long as a week, I'd say), starting a round would bring on my period. Not especially heavy, though. -------------This didn't seem to happen to me, my periods stayed pretty regular, just vary a few days in length in between sometimes, but didn't coincide with rounds of chelation.----------Jackie I also had a lot of ovary aches/pain, or weird feelings in the ovary area. I have had similar pains there when I ovulate, so I'm pretty sure it is ovary-related. Maybe I was having cysts (I have had them before). This has pretty much gone away. --------------I have also experienced ovary aches/pains, but I don't think mine have gone away. But you have used ALA, right?, and I haven't, so I'll be curious to see if that makes any difference. Also, since my appendix ruptured in August, I'm wondering if some of my pain, at least on that side, may have been my appendix, and I passed it off as ovary pain? But I have also had the pain on my left side too, so I believe it's ovaries, and probably happens more often when I'm ovulating. I have never been told I had cysts, and with all my recent abdominal CATscans, I'm sure they would have seen them and told me about them, if I had any. So my pain wouldn't be cyst related.---------------Jackie At this point, it seems like I have stopped having periods (approaching 3 months without a period, although my hot flashes have improved somewhat so who knows). My hormone levels are menopausal. My gyn thinks I may not get another period. I am not sure whether to believe this, or if it could be temporary due to chelation. My mother didn't stop having periods until mid 50s and I am only 47. --------------Hard to say, . My oldest sister still gets her period, and she's 52. My second oldest sister, who just turned 50, is already menopausal. I don't know for exactly how long, but at least a year or two, so in her late 40's. Neither one is chelating, so it may not be relevant at all. I'm 42, and no hot flashes or other signs yet.-------------Jackie Just curious if anyone is having similar experiences. ------------I'm glad you brought up this topic, its interesting. I was hoping that amalgam removal and chelation was going to make my periods better, but they really didn't change much. Bigger changes in PMS symptoms, especially anxiety being much less, which was/is great. My sister and I have speculated about the body using your period to help dump mercury, because they say you give it to your fetus to help detox yourself, so why not in your period? And I have to say, I remember feeling pretty good when I was pregnant and nursing my twins. I seemed to slowly go down hill when they were toddlers. Hmmm, after I was done nursing, no longer sharing my mercury with anyone. I find that interesting.---------Jackie (I was having irregular cycles and hot flashes before starting chelation, so it is certainly possible this would be happening whether I had chelated or not.) ---------------This is the hard part, because there is no way to ever know. You can't go back and do it both ways. I was told about a year ago that my uterus was enlarged, and this lead to all kinds of ultrasounds, scopes, procedures, etc., and in the end, they never found anything, and no explanation for my enlarged uterus. So I wonder, would this have happened whether I was chelating or not? These are the questions that we will never know for sure, but they always leave you wondering.------Jackie -- Recent Activity a.. 16New Members Visit Your Group

HI , Does ALA increase cistern levels? Could that be why some cysteine do better with ALA (Low cysteine) and or worse with ALA (high cysteine)? It also makes me feel great and I long for the day I can make it a permanent supplement when my mercury is all out. I can see better (colours very bright and clear), smell better, sleep better, concentrate better and digest better with ALA. Dean

Guest guest
> HI , > Does ALA increase cysteine levels? What Andy says is " Those low in cysteine will feel better while taking ALA and will tolerate chelation at higher doses unless they are very toxic. " (from: http://onibasu.com/archives/am/63092.html) I tolerate ALA in fairly large amounts (65mg 9x a day) and my plasma cysteine was borderline low. I have always noticed I felt better on foods like beans and eggs, which are high thiol/sulfur. Unfortunately, beans are high copper and I have an IgG allergy to eggs. I believe DMSA lowers cysteine slightly, but if I'm wrong others here will correct me. > Could that be why some cysteine do better with ALA (Low cysteine) and or worse with ALA (high cysteine)? Seems likely. > It also makes me feel great and I long for the day I can make it a permanent supplement when my mercury is all out. It might not make you feel as great when the mercury is out. Andy says plasma cysteine should get into the normal range as the metals come out. See: http://onibasu.com/archives/am/53084.html I tried adding NAC to see if that would help do something similar. I never took very much (maybe 400mg / day), but I couldn't tell it helped. > I can see better (colours very bright and clear), smell better, sleep better, concentrate better and digest better with ALA. It just makes me feel really aware and alive and great. Too bad I have the copper problem. Perhaps if I can chelate enough with DMPS to get rid of mercury, my liver will get rid of copper better. We'll see. I'd love to do more ALA both because it feels great and because I want to get the mercury out of my brain. W.
