Also, if you have 5s and 6s consider seeing a good periodontist. Despite what a dentist may tell you, a deep scaling and cleaning will likely help the gum reattach and close up the pockets somewhat. It is explensive, running around $200 a quadant, but it is much less expensive than surgery. And be sure to follow up with an every 3 month regular cleaning schedule.Maureen Corrigan wrote: Has anyone else had problems with their teeth and or gums?I just had my 6 month dental check up last week, and was told that in some areas my gums are detaching?I take better care of my teeth than my husband does and he does nothave this problem, (He doesn't have Celiac either) so I was wonderingif this could somehow be related.I know that enamel defects are known

I've had the unlucky misfortune of having gum disease since LONG

before my celiac issues began. My dentists have suspected that having

classic orthodontia (braces, head gear, the whole 9 yards) for 4 1/2

years is what precipitated my gum disease. I had the braces all

through high school and the gum disease reared its ugly head in

college. While still in college I had to have the surgery to have

every tooth re-gummed. Every tooth. It took ALL the tissue off my

upper palate. It was a nightmare. I was weeks upon weeks upon

weeks with only a liquid diet. I have to keep up with perio and

dental maintenance at a more frequent schedule than other people.

But, I've not lost any teeth yet, PRAISE G-D! I haven't any idea

if perio disease is linked to celiac or not. I can ask " Dr. Mike " next

time I go in, to see if he's heard of any link. But he's no expert on

celiac. Expert on teeth, yes. But celiac, no.

My advice - find a dentist whom you REALLY trust. Have that dentist

recommend a periodontist that is totally trustworthy. If you happen to

be in the Worcester, MA, USA area, Dr. Haddad is the guy to see. But

the odds of your being in Worcester are slim. Well, I see from your

sig that you're in NH. Is Worcester a stone's through or too far?

Get done what needs to be done to help the gum heal. And then frequent

meticulous care.

(I should talk. I'm a total slacker about flossing.)

Good luck! Esther in RI

Dr. Abraham Haddad practically wrote the book on periodontal care.

An hour's drive would be well worth it. Of course, I've not seen him

in several years since I moved away and started getting my dental care

elsewhere. But if he's still in practice, it would be WELL worth the

drive to go to him. Especially if your insurance will cover it. AND,

try both medical AND dental insurance. Periodontal disease can

sometimes be covered as a medical expense (as opposed to dental)

because it can lead to complications with cardiac care and what not.

So, if your dental insurance balks at the price, talk to your primary

care physician about being referred to the periodontist via a medical

route. Let me know if I can help more. Esther in RI

Heh heh he LOVE THAT GOOGLE!

" Google periodontist worcester ma " gets me Abraham Haddad as first hit!

I have receding gums - I've already had gum surgery on five teeth (that was at the ripe old age of 24!) Starting in 2003 I have had about 12 cavities filled - before that I'd never had one in my life (I am now 36). I definitely think it's somehow related.

Hi Maureen,

I know I am a bit behind in my emails, but I would like to weigh in on this one.

My husband is the biopsy diagnosed celiac in our family. He was diagnosed at age 57 and had already developed periodontal disease. The doctors had also convinced him to have his gall bladder removed as they thought that this was his entire problem, but that is another story.

Anyway, the periodontist wanted to do gum surgery, etc. and we were in the process of deciding when to do it when he was diagnosed with celiac disease. We discussed this with our periodontist and he said that periodontal disease is a disease of malabsorption. It can be exacerbated by poor home care as well.

We were faithful with getting our teeth cleaned every six months and pretty good with home care including flossing, so we were surprised when he developed the periodontal disease.

The good news is that after going GF and stepping up his home care and some deep cleaning by the periodontist, the gum disease has disappeared. He no longer needs to see the periodontist at all.

Take care,

Barbara in Missouri
