I've been g-f for 7 years. Have traveled on 4 continents and all over the US with this disease, and I also have a pretty good file of restaurants in Southern California where I've eaten safely, and what I eat. I'm happy to share with anyone who is travelling. Please, just ask me. Traveling and eating out are part of a fun life, and I intend to enjoy mine! BJ Quote

Guest guest Posted January 27, 2006 Report Posted January 27, 2006 Got any hints for burg, VA? I'll be headed there in a while and my previous query elicited no replies. I'll have access to a full kitchen, so even if you just know where one can buy GF grocery items in burg, then that'll be great. Esther ============ I'm in Norfolk which is an hour away from Wmsbg. I gather that The Fresh Market may have some food for you http://www.thefreshmarket.com/ pages/store_locationsDetail.aspx?StoreId=18. I have not found the VA Beach one to be a great store for GF food. Ukrops is one of VA's best grocery chains and I have heard that they stock some GF foods http://ukrops.gsnrecipes.com/recipes/ StoreLocator.aspx There is a Trader Joe's in Newport News - that's about half an hour from Wmsbg. Take the 2nd Jefferson off ramp - TJ's is in Jefferson Commons a little way down on the right. Can't help you wrt to restaurants as I haven't eaten there since my Dx. We always used to stop at Lido's for pizza on our way home from DC. Those days are now over. sorry I couldn't be more helpful. Shez Quote

Guest guest Posted January 27, 2006 Report Posted January 27, 2006 I will be traveling to LA in a couple of weeks. We will also be driving down to san diego for a day. Let me know of any suggestions you have. > > Hi - > > I'm a new member, but not a new celiac. Guest guest Posted January 27, 2006 Report Posted January 27, 2006 Do you know of anywhere in the Metro LA area (not the valley or Orange County please) Of course, I love to travel too, but eating out doesn't necessarily have to go hand in hand with traveling. I'm great with bringing my own! However, I'm willing to give a new place a try. I've had very painful experiences eating out in the past, with foods that should have been GF, so I am leary. Still, I would love to know of any places local to me. (Westside, Venice, Hollywood, Mid-Wilshire, Santa etc) I don't have kids, and I don't eat fast food. Thanks in advance. Molly I will be happy to tell you what I know about the LA area, also, havea few suggestions in San Diego. Before I start, can you tell me what area of LA you'll be in? Beach? San Valley? Orange County?Pasadena? Downtown? It's such a big area and I have quite a fewrestaurants. I really want to post the ones that will be most helpfulto you. Also, will you be eating at fast food places, with kids, casual, ornicer places. Actually I don't got o too many really upscalerestaurants, but do know a few.Sorry, I really don't have any restaurants on the East Coast. I was there BC (before celiac) and didn't pay any attention. I guess I'lljust have to go back!BJ Quote

Guest guest Posted January 27, 2006 Report Posted January 27, 2006 I forgot to reply to Doremusv, when I was writing all the stuff about eating out in LA. Well, I think I covered most of the places in Orange, and LA. My favorite place to eat in San Diego is The Prado in Balboa Park. It's a very nice, elegant indoor-outdoor restaurant, with lots of good stuff on the menu. I think they are vaguely aware of gluten-free dining, but I have: Pressed salad with it's dressing. this is a great, rather unusual salad. Chopped salad with it's dressing. also good. or Fish tacos (mahi mahi) this is a huge serving. Next time I get this I'll share it with my friend. There are also 3 very good places I'd like to mention in San Capistrano, on the way to San Diego if you take the 5 freeway. SJC is about 1/2 way in between, so it's a good place for me to meet my friends who live in SD. Cedar Creek Inn, across from the Mission chicken salad in papaya - my favorite seafood salad tostada - ask for corn tortillas Sundried Tomato chopped salad with dressing Sarducci's, 26701 Verdugo, in the Capistrano Depot - a very large, busy restaurant. you eat in the actual train depot, or in former railway cars. kids are intrigued by it. I love to eat outside by the fountain where the birds can splash the dirty water from the bird bat-fountain into my salad. it's gluten-free! the specialtie are sandwiches and pastas, but there are many salads that look gluten-free. I had the Paradise Chicken salad with no won tons. a good choice. again, please ask your waiter, manager or chef about the ingredients in the food. I have eaten t most of these places, with no ill effects, but recipes, ingredients and chefs can change, so remember to ask questions. I wish you many happy meals out! Quote
Guest guest Posted January 28, 2006 Report Posted January 28, 2006 BJ,Thank you so much. I'm almost in tears. Of all the years I've been GF (3 1/2), I have never seen such a comprehensive list for LA. I've been on all the big lists including Delphi, St. s (it has been a few since I changed my email addy and need to re-subscribe). Some of these places are near to home, and Callenders is directly across the street from where I work! I was under the impression (don't remember from where) that Marie Callenders had no GF items, so that is why I've never had more than a cocktail there. I joined a Westside support group a few years ago, and they sent a list of some restaurants, but no menu selections! The place in Glendale sounds great, but what people who don't come here might not understand is how physically large the LA metro area is. Glendale is almost an hour one way for me, and that is without any bad traffic. With my work schedule, I am so busy that it is faster to fix things at home than to try to go that far for a meal. I've never heard of this many options in my area, as most discussions center around the Orange County area (not LA to me) which is another hour drive without traffic in the other direction. I had an excellent meal at JWs Steakhouse in the Anaheim Marriot last year. Beans and rice at Baja Fresh and a rare Indonesian meal, is the extent of my eating out. I don't even prepare my own food in our kitchen at work anymore because the microwaves, counter tops and coffee pots are covered with gluten. Seems like that is all people eat! I'll check the ingredients for anything I might consume of course. Sorry for rambling on. Thanks again!Molly Okay, Molly, here's what I have in the LA Metro area:A Votre Sante, San Vicente Blvd, Brentwood Greek salad the " wheat-free " pasta on the menu is SPELT!Broadway Deli, 3rd St Promenade, Santa has a wheat-free pasta primavera on the menu. It tasted andseemed like rice pasta to me, altho the waitress never did come back to tell me what it was.California Pizza Kitchen Waldorf salad with chicken, no nuts, salad dressing is g-f BBQ sauce is g-f, has corn starch, brown sugar and onion powder BBQ chicken chopped salad all salad dressings are balsamic vinegarCallender's on Wilshire, next to the LA County Museum of Art Tuscan salad - pear, walnuts and cheese (can also add chicken) char-grilled salmon fillet char-grilled lemon -pepper chicken herb-roasted garlic chicken char-grilled vegs and chicken steamed mashed potatoes (also with chicken and cheese)Joe's, 1023 Abbott Kenny Blvd, Venice aware of g-f dietLa Serenata, 1416 4th St, Santa aware of g-f dietPat and 's (chain, funny little coffee shop) lemon mustard chickenRainforest Cafe (chain in many malls) volcanic cobb salad (order 1/2, it's huge)El Rincon Criollo, 4361 Sepulveda Blvd, Culver City grilled halibut in garlic sauce with onions, rice and beansSchatzi, 3110Main St, Santa fresh fruit with yogurtWolfgang Puck Cafe chpped vegetable salad cobb salad volcanic cobb salad (order 1/2, it's huge)I have eaten at most of these restaurants, but not all. If I eat something at a restaurant and don't have any ill effects, I assumeit's gluten-free. I do react rather quickly if I accidently ingestsome gluten, so I think I'm a pretty good measuring stick. However, just to be safe, please, always ask about the gluten status of your food, because chefs, ingredients and recipes can change. I wish youmany happy meals out!BJ Quote
