NO base is like being at home, LOL, but it just depends on what's important

to you. I liked Anaconda because I liked being on the airfield and I liked

being able to wrangle space A flights to different places. I got txfered to

a FOB with no air assets and Iraq ceased to be any fun for me, so I packed

it in. I went to see Iraq and see what was happening there, and I couldn't

do that stuck on a FOB in the middle of nowhere. I saw more of Iraq in 7

months than most people ever do and it was one of the neatest things I ever

did, but thats me. You have to decide why you are going and make decisions

based on what your motivation is. Speicher was a decent base, but the

amenities were better at Anaconda, though it got shelled all the time. Like

says, whats a big deal to me might not be a big deal to you. I had

guys transfer to other bases because they hated the noise of the airfield,

but I loved it. I hated the food in the DFACs after about a month, but I had

guys who ate there 4 times a day who couldn't get enough. The shelling

didn't bother me, but I had 2 guys who left the day after our PX got hit.

Try to stay loose and make the best of what you have. There are some

wonderful people over there if you get outside your particular group. Go out

and meet people. Make small goals the first month, and try not to think much

past the next day. Your routine is your best friend the first couple of

months. After you put 6 weeks in, you'll have your " groove " on, but its

tough on everybody if its your first deployment like this.
