My dd wanted to suck all the time for comfort, but I had oversupply problems and she would scream because she did not want anymore milk, just to suck. Using it early (I'm thinking she started liking it around 1-2 mo) didn't cause us a problem, although everyone is different. But if you do notice a change in nursing, then just take it away. Someone who has dealt with nipple confusion will probably tell me that I am being overly simplistic ..... I had one that we took it away at about 18 months...and now my last one ...well he just turned two and I'm getting soft. I was going to take it away on his second birthday...but couldn't make myself do it. But ya know what...I realized...WHY????? Why should I take it from him? Because others want me to...how silly. I allow myself my little "comforts" in life...why shouldn't he have them too. I mean it's not like he will have it for life. As it is, now he just has it at bed time. I do get kinda irritated at three and four year olds that have it all day long. But he just has his at bed time. That's it. So...until I feel it's doing him more harm...I am not taking it away because others think I should. The forces exerted in the mouth by sucking a pacifier are almost completely opposite that of breastfeeding. I certainly wouldn't make him stop because anyone else wants you to. It should be a decision made by you based on what works best for your family. Just take care that if he suddenly is fussy at the breast or his latch seems different that it could be the pacifier. Actually he isn't using you as a pacifier, it is the other way around.
