Guest guest Posted January 16, 2006 Report Posted January 16, 2006 Hello and Welcome, I understand completely how you feel, as a matter of fact most of us here can. The Starband is a good product and we have many parents here who are using them and have used them with excellent results. The most important factor in where you seek treatment should be the orthotist's experience. Any band can cause problems when in hands of an inexperienced orthotist. You just need to ask the questions: How many babies have you done? What specific training have you had in the treatment of plagiocephaly using the band, (not just the scanner), you are providing? Can I speak with any parents that have used this facility for thier children? You can also post the name of the facility you are using on here and ask for feedback from others who have gone there. The main providers are Orthomerica(Starband), www.orthomerica.com Cranial Tech(Doc Band) www.cranialtech.com and Hanger(Hanger Band)www.hanger.com so you can read up on all of them. Good Luck and let us know how things go for you and your son. Guest guest Posted January 16, 2006 Report Posted January 16, 2006 MDH's mom,Welcome to the group. Take a look at the provider list in the database. You can click here for easy access to it. If your provider is listed with an email addy of a parent who used that facility why don't you contact that parent to ask for a reference. I bet that will make you feel more comfortable. We all like to feel that we are making the best choice for our children so I understand why you would be looking for this information. We have had lots of parents in this group who are thrilled with their STARbands and I'm sure they will chime in. In the hands of an experienced and trained orthotist it can work wonders! Good luck with the fitting on Friday! Let us know how it goes. Guest guest Posted January 16, 2006 Report Posted January 16, 2006 Hi ... We've been taking our daughter to a plastic surgeon who is overseeing her progress (we're about to band her this week). I found it really interesting that he suggested a STARband for her, yet a DOCband for a friend's daughter. When I asked him about his recommendations he told me that different bands work slightly differently and depending on the shape of a child's head, he recommends one or the other. My daughter has facial assymetry and that's why he likes the STARband. He said that it will come down lower onto her face and help her balance out more than a DOC band would. My friend's daugher is flat only in the back (Brachy?) so the DOC band makes more sense for her according to this Dr. (Dr. Hall in NJ). Has anyone else heard this type of analysis? I found it so interesting. - > > > > Hi Everyone, > > > > We are new to this group and have some questions that hoepfully > > someone out there can help with. Guest guest Posted January 16, 2006 Report Posted January 16, 2006 Hi , I was wondering if your plastic surgeon has any proven scientific data to prove this. You know published studies? We have had many, many babies w/facial asymmetry receive total correction after their DOCband treatment. My baby is one of them. I've been a member of this group for almost 5 years and I've never heard this. Please let us know. Thanks, > > > > > > Hi Everyone, > > > > > > We are new to this group and have some questions that hoepfully > > > someone out there can help with. Guest guest Posted January 16, 2006 Report Posted January 16, 2006 , I have not heard of that before. My son wore a Doc band and it did wonders for his facial asymmetry and he was pretty bad, he had forehead bossing on one side and his eyes were off, and he even had a flat area on the other side of the forehead....all corrected to normal range. The Doc bands are custom made to fit each childs different needs. That is why you see some with waves( the higher pieces) and some without, there are many different types of band styles, it depends on what the child needs. I'm not sure why he would feel that way, but I guess every Dr, has thier own view of things and recommends what they feel is best. Guest guest Posted January 16, 2006 Report Posted January 16, 2006 Our orthotist who uses starbands said that Orthomerica told him that they don't deal with facial assymetry at all. Guest guest Posted January 16, 2006 Report Posted January 16, 2006 Our orthotist who uses starbands said that Orthomerica told him that they don't deal with facial assymetry at all. Guest guest Posted January 17, 2006 Report Posted January 17, 2006 That is strange. I think that many people will agree that their baby's facial asymm corrected (at least to a certain extent) with the band (DOC, STAR, Hanger etc). It makes sense since it reshapes the whole skull. My Daughter had slight facial asymmetry and it definitely corrected from wearing her Hanger Band for 11 weeks.
