Guest guest
, Have you tried the guaifenesin? I know Zoloft isn't a cure, and it can have some pretty serious side effects, but the guaifenesin, on the other hand is about the safest medication out there. It's been in use over 100 years, and the only known side effect is a rare occurrance of nausea. The guai actually reverses the illness. I've been on it since September 17th (I think... in the middle of all the fibrofog, I'm not entirely certain when I started...!), and I already feel incredibly better. I'm sleeping through the night (with the help of my new Sunbeam Warming Blanket) and the muscle pain is 70% better than it was. And I should be feeling totally miserable right now, since I'm about to start my period! My energy levels have increased enormously. I only sometimes notice the flu-like symptoms, and I haven't had a bedridden day for weeks now. Just to give you a before-and-after picture of how I was doing... I have 6 young kids, and there is a park with a playground and swimming pool across the street. I hadn't been able to take the kids across the street to the park in 4 months. My house was a complete wreck and I couldn't do the shopping any longer. Yesterday we took the kids to the playground, we even walked around the field. Then afterwards, I volunteered to walk 4 blocks to the store with the kids. I did suffer some fibrofog AT the store -- I wandered around in there for an hour, trying to decide what to buy - but I slept pretty good last night (would have been great, except the baby woke me up) and today I'm planning to take the kids to the library and the mall. This is more activity in 2 days than I was able to do all summer. And last week, we thoroughly cleaned out 3 bedrooms, including washing carpets and walls and shelves, and today, before we go to the library, we're going to clean out the garage. I am telling you, I could not do any of this a few months ago. I would wake up in the morning and CRY - struggle into the tub to try to soak the pain out of my body. And then I'd lay back down for a while. Guaifenesin is no longer under patent and it's pretty inexpensive. The pills sell for 25 cents to a dollar each, and, depending on the body, it takes 1 to 6 pills a day. Check it out at http://www.guaidoc.com Treatment can be tough at first (a few weeks ago I thought I couldn't stand it anymore), but already I can say it's been well worth it! I am getting my life back!! --Jane Doc Appt./ Zoloft Had my doc appt. she wanted to put me on Zoloft but I'm not depressed. She prescribed Flexeral and Ultram. I felt a little better today. Guest guest
When I met with my pain Dr., I told him I was on Amitriptylene, and he asked me what dose, and I told him 50 mg.. He told me that a dose for depression would be in the 300 mg range. I guess I was surprised at how much more a person could take of this stuff. Since I started gaining weight, I immediately called my GP, and asked for something else. Weight gain is the last thing I want, or need. Anyway, he took me off of it, and put me on 5 mg of Ambien, which works well for me. I'm allowed 10mg if I need it, but I haven't needed it so far. I admit, it takes me a little bit longer to fall asleep, but I think the sleep I'm getting is better, and I wake up well rested, not zombie like. Personally, I wish they'd have put me on it in the first place. Oh well, live and learn! Supposedly, it's only addictive in quantities above 20 mgs, but a lot of doctors still don't like to keep you on it long term even in lesser doses than that. Guest guest
It's not only the doctor's, the manufacturers don't like patients to take it for more than 7 to 10 day's. Doctor's are permitted to give them longer if it's necessary. I never heard anything about them being addicting though. Thanks for the info. I haven't had them for a while and now that I know this, I don't want them either. I'm on enough stuff that I *know* is addicting, at least physically. Guest guest
Rhonda, The reason that they're considered addictive is that after you've been on them for a certain amount of time (differs from one person to the next), you can't go to sleep without them and have to go through almost a " detox " process where you stay awake for awhile until you can sleep without their help again. It's not an actual physical addiction - more like your body and mind getting used to having help going to sleep. Also, I don't know if the newer meds have fixed the problem or not, but drugs like halcion were notorious for causing bad dreams and even waking " hallucinations " in some people- so usage needed to be monitored very closely. Usually a good relaxation routine before bedtime, as well as going to bed at the same time every night, will clear up most sleep problems.... - At 11:05 AM 11/11/01 -0500, you wrote: >It's not only the doctor's, the manufacturers don't like patients to take it >for more than 7 to 10 day's. I know I went on to one web site which I think was the actual manufacturer's site, although I won't swear it, and it was " may be addicting " at a higher level then most people take it. I've also seen other people who say their doctor says it's addicting at 10 mgs. which is the level my doctor gave it to me at. My doctor mentioned something about it could be addicting which is why she switched me. On the other hand, I have taken it a couple of times for a month or so each time. Never had a problem getting off of it or anything that made me feel like I was addicted. I guess it's one of those YMMV type things for both taking it and whether your doctor thinks it might be addicting. Darcy
Guest guest
I wondered about it as well, but my Dr. said that while he doesn't want me on it for years, he wasn't at all concerned about it for the next several months. I think I'm going to talk to my pain Dr. in the morning about it. I really don't want to go back to the anti-depressants again. As a matter of fact, I've decided not to, due to the weight factor. I'm trying to lose weight, not re-gain what I lost, and then gain more! I guess we'll just have to deal with it then. I don't find the med addictive, but I do admit, I'm addicted to sleeping! I have to be up early in the morning (during the week, I'm up at 5:50, and on Sundays, I'm up around 4:00 a.m.), so I'm thankful for a medicine that I can take at night that will help me sleep well, but still let me get up in the morning without feeling hung over. It seems to me, that if I was addicted to it, I'd be trying to take more of it, (meaning during the day), and I would be wanting higher doses. I don't know, I've not ever been addicted to any type of drugs, so I'm just guessing here. Guest guest
Not everyone has an addictive personality. Some things that may be addicting to one person, may not be to another. It has something to do with the way your brain functions. You can read about it, if you want to, at this website..... http://health.discovery.com/fansites/science_of/howitworks-addiction.html I saw this on the Discovery Health Channel a few months ago. It was pretty interesting. Rhonda Re: Doc Appt./ Zoloft > > > DigitalAngel wrote: > > > > It's not only the doctor's, the manufacturers don't like patients to take it > > for more than 7 to 10 day's.
