Symptoms can include hives, eczema, swelling/edema, difficulty breathing, atopic dermatitis, anaphylaxis, shock. Some folks also vomit or have drops in body temperature and blood pressure (must watch those closely for shock). CD is caused by other antibodies which cause the body to attack the intestinal lining. Most folks allergic to wheat are *not* reacting to the same gluten molecule that folks who have CD react to. They react to other proteins. However, a certain percentage of those with anaphylactic reactions to wheat *do* react to a specific gluten molecule--the omega-5 gliadin. Some react to alpha gliadins, some to glutenins. These are all different proteins found in wheat. So, yes, one can be allergic to gluten. One can be allergic to other components of wheat, too. Folks with a wheat allergy may or may not tolerate rye, oats, and barley. Some will react to those because they are all closely related. some may react due to cross contamination. Some will react because they do react to gliadin molecules similar to the hordein, secalin, and avenin found in the other grains. Someone with an anaphylactic wheat allergy can die from minute doses, contact, or inhalation. Epinephrine and antihistamines ands steroids are used to treat these reactions. Folks with less severe reactions may succesfully follow a rotation diet, but some of us end up with anaphylactic reactions in the end. :/ ygg Quote
