Guest guest Posted January 6, 2006 Report Posted January 6, 2006 My son is 4 1/2 months old and we found out today that we definitely need a cranial band. The place where we were referred uses the " Hanger " cranial band. His head was off between 16 and 17mm and I'm just trying to find out if we are doing the right thing or if we should wait a little while longer and see if we can change things by repositioning. I haven't seen too many measurements to even know how severe the cases are that other people have had to deal with and would love to get some feedback on this. Has anyone used the Hanger cranial band and what were your results? Thanks, M Quote

Guest guest Posted January 7, 2006 Report Posted January 7, 2006 I believe that a 16-17mm deviation is moderate to severe, so I doubt repositioning will do the trick for you. I'd get him into the band ASAP!! The longer you wait to put them in, the longer it takes for their heads to correct. Just my honest opinion!!! ~mommy to Rhys, getting DOC Band 1/13/06, 4 months after diagnosis- thanks insurance company!! > > My son is 4 1/2 months old and we found out today that we definitely > need a cranial band. Guest guest Posted January 7, 2006 Report Posted January 7, 2006 , You are doing the right thing by getting him banded with those measurements. Those are pretty similar to my son's. He got his DOC Band 4 days after he turned 5 months. His results were unbelievable because of the massive growth that typically occurs at that age. We've had lots of members use Hanger. The key is to make sure that your orthotist is well experienced with the bands. An improperly fitted band can actually make his head worse. Ask for before and after pictures as well as referrals. You are your son's advocate! Let us know what you do! Mom to Dane 4 yo and Cece 12 mo (DOC Grads) > > My son is 4 1/2 months old and we found out today that we definitely > need a cranial band. Guest guest Posted January 7, 2006 Report Posted January 7, 2006 Hello. To the best of my knowledge, anything above 15mm is cosidered severe (may depend on who you ask though). My Daughter was 14mm and wore a Hanger Cranial Band for 11 weeks and was down to 4mm at graduation. Feel free to email me directly if you have any questions about Hanger or the Hanger Cranail Band. ronandjenvelez@... You can see my Daughter's pictures under Before and After photos under Hanger Band ( V). Where are you located? Guest guest Posted January 7, 2006 Report Posted January 7, 2006 Hi , 16-17 is severe. With repo you may expect to see 2-3 mm improvement if you were very diligent or maybe no improvement but no worsening either. With his severity I would take advantage of his young age and band as quickly as possible. I have heard of the Hanger band. We have a few Hanger babies. Do you know which location? The experience of the ortho (person fitting and adjusting the band) is critical. Make sure they have had training specifically in cranial orthosis. With an experienced ortho and your son's young age I would expect him to get back to normal, i.e. less than 6 mm. na, 2 1/2, DOC Grad Feb 04 Kiersten, 7 months, DOC 1/10/06, Tort www.thefilyaws.com > > My son is 4 1/2 months old and we found out today that we definitely > need a cranial band. Guest guest Posted January 8, 2006 Report Posted January 8, 2006 How do you find out what their deviation is? Can you calculate it on your own or do you have to go to a specialist? Thank you. I'm new to this and trying to get as much info. as i can. > > > > My son is 4 1/2 months old and we found out today that we definitely > > need a cranial band. Guest guest Posted January 8, 2006 Report Posted January 8, 2006 No, you can't find out the deviation on your own, the specialist should give you that info. > > > > > > My son is 4 1/2 months old and we found out today that we > definitely > > > need a cranial band. Guest guest Posted January 9, 2006 Report Posted January 9, 2006 ,Welcome. Severe is usually between 16-17mm of asymmetry, although some lower numbers can be considered severe if there is signifigant ear misalignment and facial asymmetry. You can go to the Cranial Tech website www.cranialtech.com and use their assessment charts to judge for yourself. I would highly recommend banding if those numbers are correct. You would see some improvement with repo, but I am doubtful that you would get total correction without a band.We have had many members use the Hanger bands with mixed results. The key to good correction with a band is the orthotist. They must be trained in the treatment of plagiocephaly using the band they are providing. They should have extensive experience. You should be able to get names of other parents that have used them to hear about thier experiences. You should ask how many babies they have done and what results they have had. You should also post the name and location of the facility you want to use here to get feedback from others who may have used the same facility. As far as the whole process of treating plagio goes you can look at my son's website to get an idea of how it goes. I have pictures of everything and go through the whole process. It is My Banded Baby . Good Luck. CAROLG >> My son is 4 1/2 months old and we found out today that we definitely > need a cranial band.
