How old is he? Some BF babies start to become more efficient at processing

that perfect food. Therefore there is little waste. IS he still peeing OK?

I think up to 5 days is perfectly normal and up to seven is still not cause

for alarm. But when he goes...watch out!!

My Emma is 7 weeks old and only poops about once a week...this is quite normal for breastfed babies. If he is not in any pain, he's likely ok! Breastfed babies don't waste much!

I have kept quiet on this issue, but since you mentioned me. LOL I agree

that it isn't normal to go days without bowel movements. I know that LLL

feels that it is normal after six weeks and so do most doctors and

breastfeeding specialists. I personally don't agree. I have seen babies

that aren't pooping, start when they receive homeopathy, chiropractic or

cranial sacral therapy. I don't usually say anything because I end up

getting so many arguements from everyone. I don't think it is harmful for a

baby to go without pooping for a period of time, but if it were my baby I

would be seeking out some sort of solutions. Each mother needs to act upon

her comfort level. I just wouldn't be comfortable with my baby not pooping

regularly. IMHO!

At home there probably isn't much you can do. If she isn't uncomfortable and is growing and gaining then like most hcp's say it isn't a problem. Personally I would find an alternative care practitioner and discuss it with her. Like I said I don't think it is a danger and ultimately most people don't think it is a problem at all. You need to do what feels right for you. You can make sure that you are drinking plenty and eating a healthy diet. Follow your heart, if you don't think it is a problem then don't worry about it. If you find it distressing then you will need to do what feels right to you. Network Chiropractic, cranial sacral therapy or homeopathy could be a benefit. HTH

My first baby pooped only once a week for quite a few weeks and was

considered perfectly normal. He had no bowel problems and when he went we

knew to get to the changing table immediately as the diaper was loaded! He

was never in any distress and after a while he began to go more often,

baby's poop cycles often change for periods of time.

After six weeks of age it happens with some bf babies that they only go up

to 1x per week--and then it is a blow out. Occasionally my DD (now 6

months) will wait a day and then *Look Out*. If Dean is okay then don't

worry--just pack extra clothes for you both when you go out.

How often do *you* have bowel movements? Have you ever gone two days

without one? Were you hurting? Did you use anything to pass a BM?

I know I've gone more than two days before, even as an adult, and it wasn't

because I was sick or needed intervention. When I am under stress, my

bowel habits change. If I eat unusual foods, my bowel habits change. It

might not be any different for your child.

Place your ear on his tummy and listen for gurgling sounds... bowel

movements. If you hear them, he's making poopies, but just may not have

had enough waste products from food to make enough to form something solid

enough to poop! If you don't hear any bowel sounds, call your doctor and

discuss it with him. Most doctors will recommend something for loosening

stools... like prune juice, or even karo syrup (which can contain botulism

spores and is a no-no). Give your baby some more time to work it out

himself. If he indicates that he needs your help passing it, then by all

means, do so. If he complains of pain, definitely call a doctor.
