Trying to decide between STARBand and DOCBand

I am trying to decide between the Starband and the Docband. For me,

Starband is local, only a 20 minute drive. The nearest Docband clinic

is in Charlotte, NC which is an 8-hour drive roundtrip. Also, my

son's physical therapist, pediatrician, and STARband clinic are all

located within a mile of each other. My son is 5 months old with

mostly brachy and a little plagio. If the Docband is far superior in

terms of results and comfort, I would not hesitate to make the weekly

trip to Charlotte. If they are about equal, I would rather stay

local. Any advice?

Why don't you check out both places and see which one you like best? Ask to see the bands in person and meet with the orthotist/clinician.

We used DOC Bands for both our plagio kids, but we have had parents here who have had positive experiences with the STARbands too. You can read about the differences here. You can see pictures of two bands made for the same child here. They are a bit different so it's nice to be able to see side by side.

You will want to make sure the STARband ortho is skilled with the bands. That really is the key. If he has a lot of experience and a great reputation your child could really see some rounding! If not, no improvement or more deformity can occur. Here is a great list of questions to ask.

You can also see lots of before and after shots of kids using both bands in the photos section. Just click on Before and After DOC band and Before and After STARband.

Why don't you check out both places and see which one you like best? Ask to see the bands in person and meet with the orthotist/clinician.

My son received his STARband last Friday and he has not seemed uncomfortable at all. We have been very pleased with his reaction to it. Obviously, I can't give you any information on results since it has only been a week, but wanted to give you a little input. You can always go to both places for an evaluation. I know CT will do a

free evaluation, I'm not sure about the Starband facilty that you are

near. The key to good results is the training and expertise of the

orthotist. I know CT requires full training of all clinicians in the

treatment of plagiocephaly using the Doc band. Check that the Starband

orthotist has been trained in the treatment of plagiocephaly using the

Starband. You will want to know how many babies have been done by the

orthotists, and what the results were. Are there parents you could

speak with to hear about thier experience with this facilty, also post

the name and location of the clinics here and see if one of our many

Starband or Doc Band parents have used it. The choice is a personal

decision, but it is best to check out all your options first before

deciding. I can share with you my experience with CT for my son. Here

I use the Charlotte DOC band clinic. My oldest got her DOC bands

there and now my youngest is in one (darned tort). I really like them

and respect them. We do 300 miles round trip - just did it today.

It's a haul. Where are you? Do we have the starband location listed

in our database? Is there a parent contact listed? If there is, you

may want to conact them. They can let you know about the parent side

of the treatment. Have you interviewd both locations? It really

depends on the ortho. Both bands work on the same theory. The DOC

band has clinical trials to back it up. I know the CT orthos go

through extensive training initially and then up to 2 weeks additonal

training each year. The STARband orthos all differ in their training

and experience levels. I would at least go interview the local

place. Get a feel for it. See what their experience level is. They

usually are a little cheaper and 20 minutes is way better than 8 hours.
