Guest guest
We were told that my son should avoid " ground-pounding " type exercise, like jogging, basketball, etc., because it can increase proteinuria. Swimming was particularly recommended. Guest guest
What I would suggest is reading whatever is available for yourself. Go to the PubMed website, which is at http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?db=PubMed In the search box, just type in the following: exercise iga nephropathy A number of interesting articles should come up. Generally-speaking, I can repeat what others have already said, ie. ground-pounding type of exercises, rough contact sports and that sort of thing can increase (a) the chance of injury to the kidneys and ( they tend to favour increased proteinuria - but that's not to say there's any hard evidence of any harm. Weightlifting and similar activities can really spike up the blood pressure while you're lifting, and I mean figures like more than 300 over whatever. It's hard to argue that this can be good for kidneys that are already damaged. On the other hand, aerobic-type exercises that aren't of the " ground pounding " type like swimming, cycling, stationary cycling, etc. are not only Ok, but they are usually highly-recommended. People with chronic kidney disease are already at greater risk for cardiovascular disease, so anything that keeps the cardiovascular system in good tone is good (assuming that there's nothing else medically wrong with the person). In terms of work, well, I had a varied career during my first 2 decades with IgAN, and some of it included extremes of temperature, dirt and lack of sleep during army exercises. I handled it Ok, but since I was an officer, I guess I didn't work as hard physically as others might have - although I certainly did my share. I wasn't in the infantry, so we had vehicles to take us places and we had tents as opposed to holes to sleep in Nevertheless, I still did a lot of hard stuff in extreme cold and extreme heat. I also did hard physical stuff on my own, like re-roofing a house, landscaping, and that sort of thing. If I had to give an opinion, I would have to say that I probably tired more easily than the average guy my age though. As already mentioned, one thing a person should avoid is dehydration. People with IgAN aren't made of glass, and they won't melt either. With a little common sense, there's little they can't do. It certainly didn't prevent me from doing anything the first 20 years or so - and my kidneys lasted 25 years after the first time a doctor discovered the blood in my urine. Guest guest
Pierre I think I'm going to forward the " aren't made of glass " statement on to my husband. He is worried about me doing things like moving the dirt we had delivered or getting down and dirty with my shovels in the garden. I keep trying to point out to him that I still have to live without the glass bubble around me. Jim the one other thing I can add to the great info you have gotten is that if he is going to be in the sun that he wear a light long-sleeved shirt and hat depending on the meds he is taking. Certain medications can make you very sensitive to sunlight and covering up if you are going to be out for long periods is always a good idea, kidney disease or not. A good sunscreen, proper attire, and plenty of water should be his mantra. Also checking with his doctor regarding the type of work he will be doing might be prudent, there are things his doctor knows that we can only guess at.
