Guest guest
Hi Elaine Thank you for your information. To order the book you have recommended I will need a ISBN number and the publisher. The book shop I go to say it is always easier to locate a book if I have those two things. I will go to the Australian website and check it out. Thank you. I also want to ask is anyone having problems with itching? I don't know if it is because I'm over heated but seem to be itching all the time especially on my legs and my back. I had a watery itch before taking the medication however it has escalated and now itchy all the time. Also the interance to the heat.......will that go away? Guest guest
The itching may be a (not very good but possibly tolerable) reaction to the ATD. Or it may be the itching that's symptomatic of Graves. I had it on my palms and feet, all over, especially. It went away. Take care, Fay P.S. Soy is fine for overactive thyroids. Not to alarm you but you really want to keep an eye out on your doctor if his(?) aim is to get your thyroid underactive. Just don't stay on too high a dose (bet he'll want to keep you on 20 mg. for 4-6 months) for too long. ________________________________________________________________ GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO! Guest guest
Sue, Do you have access to Amazon.com? Just search for the book there. Also, itching is common and has many manifestations especially before treatment settles the thyroid down some. I had blotchy 2-inch round itche (can't translate to metric, sorry!) all over my hips and they finally went away. However is possibly a reaction to the medicine if it's new. Intolerance to heat will go away as you move from hyper towards euthyroid; intolerance to cold marks hypOthyroid. There's a symptom list, it's pasted all over the archives but Jody sent it out to someone on 2/11 in a post, so you won't have to search too far back. Kelp, iodine containing medicines, natural or not, iodine in multis--avoid them all. Will make you more hyper. Finally, do take the time to read posts here on RAI. We've had a flurry of them recently and the archives are packed full as well. We're currently working on documenting a " top 20 reasons I'll never have RAI " list with appropriate medical footnotes, to give to our doctors. The list, without the footnotes, follows. Terry Top 20 Reasons Why I¹ll Never Have RAI 1. It¹s permanent; if you don¹t like the results, too bad 2. Since the science is inexact, it may have to be repeated 3. Graves disease is an auto-immune disease, not a disease of the thyroid, so killing the thyroid doesn¹t stop the disease 4. Who ever said hypothyroidism is easy to treat, lied 5. Being hypothyroid is neither less debilitating nor less dangerous than hyperthyroid 6. Increased antibody titers after RAI skew lab test results, adding to treatment difficulties 7. RAI is absorbed by other organs and can cause cell death or DNA mutations 8. For up to 4 weeks after dosage, we¹re exposing those around us to radioiodine 9. Studies show an increase in cancers, especially of the thyroid gland and small bowel, after RAI. 10. Possibility of damaging the parathyroid, causing hypoparathyroidism. 11. RAI can cause difficulty with future attempts to become pregnant and carry pregnancies to term 12. Chance of thyroid eye disease developing increases dramatically 13. Chance of significant, unhealthy weight gain is increased 14. Replacement hormone products currently on the market, both synthetic and pig, are not comparable to our own hormone, leading to 15. Increased risk of developing fibromyalgia 18. For most GD patients, medication with ATD¹s creates a euthyroid state similar to " normal life " 19. Guest guest
First off, Hi Sue and welcome to the group. I hope this group will be as helpful to you as it is to me. I used valerian for the itching and hives I get, but you have to watch I think about how much you use. Read the bottle. If someone else knows otherwise maybe they will jump in. I usually take 2 tablets with a glass of water and very seldom have had to take more. Except when my whole body was covered in hives the size of quarters after a perm. Until the smell of the perm went away everytime I showered or washed my hair my whole body would break out in hives. This never happened until after GD. Debbie R. Guest guest
Hi folks... Itching can be from the ATD's or from the GD itself. In either case it is okay to take, per a doc's prescription, some benedryl. The itching does not mean that you are having a bad or dangerous reaction, even if it is from the ATD's. Hope this helps. Hello all those newly with us. Jeannette
Guest guest
Haven't followed all of the itching threads, but my two cents: I had itching off and on while hyperthyroid. I also had horrible, horrible hives sometimes, too! The one thing that got rid of the itching AND the hives was acupuncture. B Re: Itching > > > > First off, Hi Sue and welcome to the group. Guest guest
Hi Sue, With the increase in itching and today a sore throat I really urge you to call your doctor now...don't wait. I don't know how quickly things can go bad should you be having a reaction to the tap but no use in taking chances or making something worse. Also, for itching, try 1-2 cups of baking soda in a warm bath and have a good soak. Normally 1/2 cup is enough but for the excessive itching, my husband uses more when it happens to him...just be very very careful getting out of the tub, it will be slippery! And rinse the tub so whoever is up for shower doesn't go down on their bums! See if you can tolerate PTU; members of this group have successfully switched. Hope you feel better soon!
