Guest guest
Hi Rick, Banding can correct some of the facial asymmetry concerns you expressed - I have seen some incredible change in many of the before and after progress photos in the photos section of the group, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you that your son will also get this type of correction! I may not be giving you any new information regarding the band available from NOPCO, but I thought I'd respond. NOPCO orders its helmets from Orthomerica, a manufacturer/distributer. The helmet available at NOPCO is Orthomerica's Starband. Information about Orthomerica's Starband is available on their website: http://www.orthomerica.com/products/cranial/starband.htm As you can see from Orthomerica's webpage, the Starband is " active, " " requires frequent follow-up for ongoing adjustments, " and per their FAQ page, " Typically, the infant is seen a week after the initial fitting and approximately every 2 to 3 weeks thereafter, throughout the course of the treatment program. Younger infants may require more frequent follow up appointments since their heads are growing so rapidly. " Information provided to the group from parents who have gone to NOPCO yields that their infants are seen approx. once every 4 weeks or so. This adjustment schedule is indicative of a less agressively styled helmet interior - a passive helmet. In addition to the adjustment schedule, one previous poster said that the ortho there confirmed himself that they modify the Starband to be a passive band. This adjustment schedule and less aggressively styled interior is not how Orthomerica advertises its Starband qualities and protocol, and is not at all common amongst the orthotists nationwide that order Starbands for use. By the way, passive products DO work! Many babies here have used passive products successfully. However, it is very important for parents of older plagio babies to be aware of what type of product is being offered. While active bands work well on both older and younger babies, passive helmets work best on younger babies with lots of growth spurts ahead of them. This is because passive helmets provide a round shell that babies' heads eventually grow into, while active bands more closely follow the contours of the head, and redirect growth more immediately, necessitating the frequent adjustments. Would you refresh my memory as to how old your son is? Although I can remember more poor experiences with NOPCO posted on this board, I can recall one other NOPCO success story, too, if you are interested. Grace's dad even made a website about their experience there. Even though it was some time ago, he may be available for email contact if you'd like to communicate with him. Here is Grace's plagio website: http://www.oddnoggin.com/index.html Grace's situation was unique in my memory, because she was quite old by usual standards to be in a modified-to-be-passive Starband from NOPCO, but I think her dad said she got good correction. Good luck with everything, and please post updates when you can! I'd welcome learning any more details about the NOPCO Starband protocol, i.e. how often your son is being seen, etc. Take care, Christie (Mom to Repo'd Remy) > > > > > > > > My son was born with tort. Guest guest
Thank you. My son is 3 months old today, he has had a " flat spot " on record from his two week old visit. We had him scanned a week ago yesterday and the diag's were off by 20 mm. His hears are significantly (45 degrees from center line) assymetrical, facial is minor but noticable when you look for it. I spoke with NOPCO today, it is a Starband and should be in tomorrow. As we have to go to Children's anyway I am going to see if we can't get him seen tomorrow to be fitted in Boston rather then waiting for next Tuesday in the Avon location. Has anyone had experiance with Carol Craig as their OT as she will be the primary seeing our son in the Avon location. Thank you in advance, Rick > > > > > > > > > > My son was born with tort. Guest guest
Wow, Rick, At three months old, your son is a very young baby, and should expect excellent correction to both his plagio asymmetry as well as facial asymmetry since he is getting into a band at that young age. I believe 3 months is the youngest FDA approved age for banding, so you can't get more on the ball than that! 20mm is considered severe asymmetry, so I am thrilled that you all were made aware of and are seeking some sort of treatment at this early age for your son. Good luck at the fitting, and let us know how it goes, Take care, Christie (Mom to Repo'd Remy) > > > > > > > > > > > > My son was born with tort. Guest guest
Rick, How did the fitting go today? Did NOPCO make his band passive or did they leave it the way it came in from Orthomerica? Christie is right your son should receive amazing correction at his age. > > > > > > > > > > > > > > My son was born with tort. His cord was wrapped around > > his > > > > neck > > > > > > > twice. Guest guest
Fitting is not officially until Tuesday the 14th. Spoke to NOPCO today, they are supposed to get the Starband in tomorrow in Boston. Just so happens I will be in Boston in the morning with my son (different appointment for him at Children's) so I am going to wait to see if it shows up at 11. Wish me luck on that front... I've posted a few pictures of in the photos section, see the album " MJC " . I'll keep you posted, I really want his helmet on tomorrow so we can start the healing... Guest guest
Hi Rick, Both of my girls had/have facial and ear asymmetires. My oldest wore 2 DOC bands. My youngest is currently in a DOC band. na had great correction even in her ears. Kiersten is showing some good correction so far. We saw a huge imrpovement in her ears the past 2 weeks - like very noticable. If you check the link below and go to their plagio page you can get their stories and pics. What happens with facial assymetry is as the skull is corrected the face tends to follow (as long as tort is not holding it back). mom to na, 2 1/2 years, DOC Grad, tort Resolved Kiersten, 8 months, DOC Band 1/10/06, Tort www.thefilyaws.com > > > > > > > > > > My son was born with tort.
