Hi guys, I have not wrote much lately..but my son who is 8 yo HFA has

developed a new habit I am concerned about and I would appreciate any input,

good or bad..my first thought with this new thing is tourrettes.. I hope I am

wrong..

What he is doing is EVERYWHERE he goes, he knocks on the surface, with a

closed fist repeatedly. Tables, wallls,EVERYWHERY!! I tried to talk with

him about why he does it or how he feels and he just says he does not know.

Does this sound like tourrettes to any of you or am I just being a nervous

mom?

and HFA, 8

Maybe. To render a dx of Tourette's there must be some sort of

vocal/oral tic, the tic(s) must wax and wane, and there must be at

least a six month history. It's a possibility, but not necessarily

a probability he has Tourette's.

Some people with OCD have certain rituals that they must repeat over

and over. Does he always knock the same number of times, or us a

number that is always a multiple (ie. groups of three).

Maybe it is an auditory and/or tactil or kinesthetic sensory stim.

Knocking on different surfaces produces a different sound. Different

surfaces wil have varying textures that might be interesting to

feel. Maybe the knocking gives him some deep pressure feedback for

his arm/hand that makes him more aware of where his limb is and how

he is using it?

Possibly this is just a stim and you might be able to replace it with

something less annoying.

Good luck.
