Guest guest
Hi Jack, I don't have an answer for you on cramps. Some people do experience cramping as they approach kidney failure. It can also be a side effect of meds. Serum creatinine level and " creatinine clearance " are different ways of determining kidney function. Creatinine is a protein produced by muscle and released into the blood. The amount produced is relatively stable in a given person. The creatinine level in the serum is therefore determined by the rate it is being removed, which is roughly a measure of kidney function. If kidney function falls (say a kidney is removed to donate to a relative), the creatinine level will rise. Normal is about 1.0 (I believe they use different units in the UK so don't be thrown by these numbers - someone else here can hopefully help with that!) for an average adult. Infants that have little muscle will have lower normal levels (0.2). Muscle bound weight lifters may have a higher normal creatinine. Generally, larger, more muscular people have higher " normal " levels of creatinine than smaller people. While creatinine is not per say " bad " , creatinine levels rise as the kidneys go downhill. There is wonderful information on fish oil on the web site at IGAN.CA. Look for it in the IgA Nephropathy Notebook. Sorry to hear your net access is limited! We look forward to hearing from you when you come back!. Cy thanks for the welcome > i like to thank every one for making me feel welcome esp. everyone who replied to my questions.my access to the net is limited reason for delay in replying. i am learning more about this condition, just if i could reply in general to some of yer queries.i find unless i ask, my neph he will not tell me much.i do not know what any of my blood test levels are i have one coming back soon i intend to find out. at present the neph has me on adalat retard 10mg twice aday, lipitor 10mg one at night, cardura xl 4mg aday, tritace 10mg aday i beleive he can only treat the BP i do not know what his plan is for the future. > what pierre said about life insurance comes as a blow because myself and my wife have talked about getting cover for a while it does not look good now. maybe someone else might have gone through this before.i enjoy reading all the different posting, but dont have enough time to make reply . > i have alot of questions yet maybe i could ask 1 or 2 on this occasion. > > 1. alot of cramps mostly during the night and morning after getting out of bed more than lightly medication ? > 2. creatinine levels they seem to be very important what do they actual > tell you. > 3.fish oils is it how they slow down the condition and has any one found them any good if so what kind and in what form. > > > thanks jack king. > > > > > > > > > > > > > --------------------------------- > Yahoo! Guest guest
Hi Jack, I think I may have missed your original email, so welcome to the group! 1. In response to your questions, the muscle cramps are a reflection of electrolyte imbalances, not due to medications. 2. Creatinine levels are a means of tracking renal function. Roughly, each time your creatinine level doubles, you have lost 50% of the remaining kidney function. For example, my normal for my size as a fairly small female would be 0.7 before I got IgAN, so: ..07 = 100% function 1.4 = 50% function 2.8 = 25% function 5.6 = 12.5% kidney function 3. There are mixed results on the fish oil, but my Neph said they may help, but certainly don't hurt. You can read about fish oil on our sister site, www.igan.ca. You will find lots of very good information there. Welcome again. Guest guest
Hello Jack, Let me say welcome. Fish oil can help some people and can be found in health food store in a pill form which I think is the best way to take it. The cramping at night I still not sure what cause them but since my doctor put me on a muscle relaxer 3x a day I don't get them as often (Still every now and then if i push myself). As for the creatinine as far as I know it is your kidney function. As long as that runs good things should be ok, but I can be wrong. Hope things get better for you.
