Guest guest Posted October 13, 2005 Report Posted October 13, 2005 Hi Carolyn, You're not the first one to have negative feedback about Paramus CT. My duaghter's pediatrician and physical therapist both told me that CT had a recent change of staff and had seen kids with poor fittings lately. Our Physical Therapist recommended Cranial Solutions in Pompoton Lakes, NJ. I spoke to the Orthotist there who told me they use a proprietary band that he makes himself. It is like the Doc band. He said he's been making his own bands for 5 years, and working with plagio kids for 20 years. I'm not sure how I feel about using a proprietary band ... My pediatrician recommends Nouveau in Hazelet, NJ. There have been posts on this list about Nouveau. Please post us progress - I hope you have good results. - --- In Plagiocephaly , " Carolyn " <ginasmomma@y...> wrote: > > I know someone was asking opinions on CT. Guest guest Posted October 13, 2005 Report Posted October 13, 2005 Hi Carolyn. I too didn't have a great experience at the Paramus location. The girl who answers the phone was wonderful. I thought that they were pushing the band and used the scare tactic with us, that Brielle would have all the health issues if we didn't do it. We didn't end up banding her and I was a bit annoyed with them. I practically forced the girl to do the measurements on Brielle. Come to find out she was new 4 months there. Brielle was 7mm cranial vault Enough said, it sounds like your baby is making great progress. From what I had read in the past, 0-3 mm normal 4-6 mm doesn't need a band is mild, so your baby is doing great. Good luck. Guest guest Posted October 13, 2005 Report Posted October 13, 2005 Carolyn, I'm sure if you ask them to measure him throughout treatment they will. When Dane was banded I asked a couple times for measurements to reassure myself. Sorry to hear you had a less than positive experience so far. Hopefully that will change soon, but it's important to share our feelings. Mom to Dane 4yo (DOC Grad) and Cecelia 9 mo (DOC 9/05) Quote
Guest guest Posted October 13, 2005 Report Posted October 13, 2005 Carolyn, Sorry to hear that you're not totally pleased with your ortho at CT! I went to the Chicago Oakbrook clinic and I was very pleased with my clinician and all the staff there! As far as the measurments go, we never had any taken. Our ortho said they are for insurances usaully and my insurance didn't require them. We just based Waydon's improvements from the headsicle and the photos. Hope you start feeling better with them after another visit or two! Lacy Waydon's mom 11 1/2 months DOCgrad tomorrow. > > I know someone was asking opinions on CT. Guest guest Posted October 14, 2005 Report Posted October 14, 2005 Hi Carolyn, I'm sorry to hear you aren't thrilled with your experience so far. I do think it's important to talk to your ortho about that though b/c you need to be comfortable with who you are getting treatment from. To address some of your concerns though, with measurements like your son has it is CT's job to recommend a band. His measurements put him in the moderate category, which is definitely band worthy. If you think it's just a racket to make $3,000 as you said, do you mind me asking then why you decided to band him? Bands are amazing things and saved my daugther very invasive surgery for her severe plagio, and for that I would have paid out of pocket in a second even I had to pay for it for the rest of my life! CT does not use measurement b/c they simply don't tell the whole story. They have a considerable margin of error and dont' reflect all areas of concern (low or high flat spots for instance). They are just a 2D assessment of a 3D area, so they can't possibly reflect all areas of concern. They use the headsicle instead and compare the visual changes. I didn't care what my daughter's measurements were, but just that her plagio and facial asymmetry wasn't noticable anymore. We only had her measured at the very beginning of her first band (she wore three) and then at the end of the first band only because I asked. I was just curious b/c her change was so incredible! All the CT's run on the same basic policies, as they are all run by the corporate office, so they all do things basically the same. They can't give you a very good idea of how long your baby will be banded b/c it depends largely on how quickly your baby grows, which obviously can't be predicted. It also depends on the level of correction you are looking for. They may say your baby is a candidate for a second band, meaning a he can achieve more correction in one, but if you are happy after the first band then you stop. It's all up to you. Again though, I would definitely talk to your ortho about your concerns. Guest guest Posted October 14, 2005 Report Posted October 14, 2005 Carolyn, I'm sorry to hear that you are feeling a bit unsatified with the CT in Paramus. To put your mind at ease all clinicians are fully trained and then go through like you had a " tag team " phase before ever touching a baby alone. This training is more than any of the other providers ever go through. The measurements are used for insurance only because they are only two dimensional measurements on a three dimensional head. A good clinician uses thier eyes and hands to assess the baby's head. One baby may show asymmetry of let's say 5mm and another might show asymmetry of lets say 3mm and look worse, it depends on where on the head and how the asymmetry in that particular area affects the look of the head. Does that make sense to you. The length of time spent in a band varies with the growth rate of the child, but a maximum band life is 16 weeks. So your answer is until your son grows out of the band (if before 16 weeks) or the full band life(16 weeks). You will know if there is change because you will see it as it occurs. You will also have a chance at each visit to compare the orignal headmold to his head at each visit. No one is going to be in business for free, especially not in the medical field, but after going through what I have, they can have my money and I will thank them for taking it. Let me know if you have any more questions you need help with. Also have you contacted the office manager in Paramus and told her your concerns, this is the only way things can be made better for you. Guest guest Posted October 14, 2005 Report Posted October 14, 2005 , Who told your pediatrician and pt about these bad fittings, or did they determine this on thier own? I think this is a very important because if there have been bad fittings coming out of NJ then someone should notify CT corporate, maybe you can have your doc or pt call the office and let them know. A problem like this that is observed by a doctor should immeadiately be reported to a provider so the situation can be thorough investigated and fixed. Guest guest Posted October 14, 2005 Report Posted October 14, 2005 Debbie, Now you know me and I am not one to get on someone about what they want to say, but lately it seems like you have been doing alot of CT bashing. I know you had a hard time back then, and were worried because the clinician was new, but I don't think they were pushing you into a band at all. I told you this back then too. I think they were trying to help a nervous mom who was extremely concerned that repo alone would not realign her daughters ears. Ct begins banding babies at 5mm so if Brielle was 7mm then she was a candidate for banding. I think more than someone pushing a band on you, you got a newer clinician who hadn't quite developed that bedside manner of dealing with us insane plagiomoms. It just doesn't feel right when you say the things in the way you have been. CAROLG > > > > I know someone was asking opinions on CT. Guest guest Posted October 14, 2005 Report Posted October 14, 2005 Carol, I think you need to go back and reread my posts. I have told parents here that if my daughter was more severe I would have had her in a DOC band or a helmet, regardless of the OT's bedside manner. I give my advice on repositioning and my story and I do tell others to seek out CT's opinion. Yes, and I am sorry if this doesn't sit well with you, but I do have an issue with the professionalism of the OT I was dealing with. Not only at the visit but on the phone days later when she said Brielle had lots of noticeable facial assymetry (I really think she didn't remember who we were) but she had to throw in repeatedly the medical issues Brielle would possibly endure if we didn't band her. If you read the literature they themselves give out, they state that these medical issues are rare and in severe cases. Perhaps this OT doesn't read the literature she gives out or she wasn't quite as trained as you claim they all are. So, I am sorry if you think I am CT bashing, but I am only giving people on this board my opinion when they ask. Debbie. > > > > > > I know someone was asking opinions on CT. Guest guest Posted October 14, 2005 Report Posted October 14, 2005 Debbie,Since coerced me into becoming a moderator again I've spent sometime going over past posts of active members to learn about their situations.I must have missed something because I was reading how your clinician was "sweet" here and how your pediatrician recommended the band here. But on the post below you are talking about the clinician's poor bedside manner at the visit. It didn't seem you felt you were being forcefed a band at the time. What made you decide to call afterwards? I guess I don't understand what you wanted to hear. I think I even read you had a casting date after your insurance was approved. I think it's great that we all share our experiences, negative and positive, so we can help the newbies make decisions. I'm just trying to understand your whole situation. I must have missed something. I'm really glad you are pleased with the results of repositioning. That's ultimately what really matters about the whole plagio experience. > Yes, and I am sorry if this doesn't sit well > with you, but I do have an issue with the professionalism of the OT I > was dealing with. Guest guest Posted October 14, 2005 Report Posted October 14, 2005 , I really don't want to write my whole story again. Sounds like you already read it. We had conflicting opinions from the specialists and CT. The pediatrician did not think she needed the band but wrote me a script to get the ball rolling in case we decided to do it. The board and CT were telling me that there is a window of opportunity and the younger the better, so that is why I scheduled a casting appt. Why I called CT back? I wanted to talk about repostioning the measurements she took and the health issues she discussed with me. We decided not to band after going back to the cranial facial specialist at Childrens Hosp. of PA and the dr. being happy with her progress since repositioning. I really don't like to be mean about people and that is why I said the clinician was sweet, maybe poor choice of words regarding bedside manner, maybe I should have said that she tried to scare me into banding my baby. Guest guest Posted October 14, 2005 Report Posted October 14, 2005 Debbie, Thanks for paraphrasing. With three kids and four pets I didn't have time to read everything that happened this summer so I appreciate it! I'd say there is quite a difference in describing someone as " sweet " who you thought was scary though. I just saw (from the second link) that your ped advised you to band her because you were so worried that she thought you'd regret not doing it later. Thanks for clarifying! > > > Yes, and I am sorry if this doesn't sit well > > > with you, but I do have an issue with the professionalism of the > OT I > > > was dealing with.
