hi becky! i am michelle. my husband paul and i live in northern ontario

with our two boys sebastian (11) and rowan (6). rowan was diagnosed with

autism in february of 1999. i am sorry you are having such a hard time

securing a diagnosis and services. i have never heard of a child so young

being diagnosed with aspergers, i always understood it to be a diagnosis

usually not handed out to children under 8. rowan has benefitted alot from

ABA-style programs (he was never in a pure lovaas program). i saw an

interesting new website recently with many ABA resources. i'll post it once

i look it up!

Beck - Portland - as in Oregon? Since the regional terminology you

are using sounds familiar (ESD, etc., I am going to presume you are

in OR) I am down near Coos Bay where we have alot of trees and

water. You have a great many more services available to you up

around the P-town area than I do down here. I am assuming you have

been seen up at OHSU CDRC? It just isn't what it was without Dr.

Stubbs. Ugh. Services offered very immensly from county to county

and even within districts. So much for the state's grand plan to

equally fund all the schools on a per capita basis. For the time

being it doesn't really matter what you call the dx as long as you

get the services. The dx doesn't change the child or their

relationship with you at all, it is an admission ticket for

services.

There is a group up in the Portland area that may have much of the

Portland specific information you are seeking. They are called FEAT

(Families for Early Autism Treatment). They are a very proactive ECE

advocacy group and I do not necessarily agree with all that they

profess, but they are a good group with excellent resources

nonetheless.

On Yahoo Groups there is a egroup called OR Autism Support, or

something like that. They are a nice group, but smaller of course

and you might find some information there too. I belong to it but

really don't participate in that group unless I need OR specific

information becasause PA is where I would rather be. I have no life

and no time, and what little time I have I'd rather spend here with

these people. :-)

I've heard there is a DAN doctor in Salem, but that's about as much

as I know since we haven't gone that route.

I know I've rattled off a bunch of words at you, and if you don't

know what any of them are just ask. When we started this journey

through services and testing years back I felt like everyone around

me was speaking a foreign language, so over the years I've learned as

least to fake it really well, lol. It does help if you know the

terminology that the system uses, but really what matters is that you

know your kid. I had no idea what the professional terminology

called his delays but I knew how my kid learned, what he needed to

learn, what he couldn't do, and what he did do.

Okay, I'm tired and I'm rambling an I'm way way behind in posts so

I'll stop now.
