Good question... my Rowan gulps a lot of air too and is very gassy but I've never had sore nipples so I didn't think it was a latch problem.

My sister's baby is now 4 weeks old and they're doing really good withbf'ing. They had some latch trouble at first and Tara had sore/crackednipples, but they are fine now. I have noticed that I can hear the babygulping air when he eats, and he gets very burpy as a result. is this alatch problem or just something some babies do?S.

Ahhhh that's what I have then....Keely never had a problem with it but I guess Rowan does lol I usually do what you suggested with the cloth :-) He doesn't have a problem at night when we lay down to nurse, I guess it doesn't spray out as fast huh?

Michele

Sounds like over active let down. It is when the milk comes inhard & fast. Like trying to drink off a fire hydrant. If whenshe fills the milk come down & takes the baby off & the milksprays out far then it is probably over active let down. Itwould help for her to pull the baby off at let down & let thefast milk spray in to a cloth or bottle if the baby can't handleit or gets too gassy. BTDT Jen & Ben 1/26/97 & 1/10/00

Michele,

Some things that you can do are to nurse him in a modified football hold. It is having him sit up completely and face you just to the side of your hip or straddling one leg. Bring him to your breast and support everyone with pillows. This helps him to not swallow so much air and to help regulate the flow of milk. You can also just offer him one breast for three hours and then switch sides. For example he wants to nurse at 9am offer left breast, he wants to nurse again at 10:30 offer left breast, he wants to nurse again at 11:45 offer left breast, after noon offer right breast and continue to offer right breast for three hours. This helps to tell your body to produce less milk and allows him a chance to take more of the hindmilk from each breast. You can also allow your milk to spray into a cloth diaper once you letdown and then latch him back on when the milk slows. This might help you both get your supply to where it is manageable for him. Well after responded to me (thank you !) I decided I wouldn't bother emailing her, I have started trying that 3 hour thing and the modified football hold if he lets me. He got mad at me last night when I tried it, I think he was uncomfortable lol

I also passed this info on to an online friend of mine with a baby Rowan's age who has the same problem. She has been struggling from day one to get the baby nursing (her first she pumped for 6 weeks feeding him by bottle then gave up) she was doing a lot of pumping and bottle feeding for a few weeks because the baby wouldn't latch right and was jaundiced. She was down to one nursing session a day with the rest EBM feeds by bottle but is now up to all breastfeeding with an occasional bottle of EBM. I am very proud of her! She is only 21 but is more determined than I was at 23 to make it work. I bought her Dr Newman's bfing book and she found the part about latching very helpful. She calls me her "booby support" and we work through problems together or I'm just her sounding board when she gets frustrated :-) We are also kindred spirits, we are on a March 2000 list together and got picked as cyber shower partners to exchange a gift, she has a 2 y/o ds and knew she was having a girl and I have a 2 y/o dd and knew I was having a boy so we swapped hand me down baby clothes as well and her dd was born sunny side up with no forceps help either (her's was also a VBAC, mine wasn't) Anyway, now I'm rambling :-)

I wrote her quite a long time ago & heard nothing back so far. What has helped the most is to nurse on one side for three hours,i.e.. every time she wants to nurse during a three hour period Iuse only one breast. I don't switch at all.Jen & Ben 1/26/97 & 1/10/00

Thanks ! I will let her know. Rowan seems to like being upright whenever he's awake anyway so I'm finding more comfortable positions for him to nurse in. The nurses at the health center yesterday thought he was so funny, I was nursing him cross legged on the floor and he maneuvered himself so that he was sticking straight out between my legs with his head bent all the way back, but he was comfortable and semi-upright lol

He is now 11 lb 12 oz and doing great, he also had his 2 month check up last night and the Dr was impressed with him, she knows we are working on the over active letdown. He also has some cyst like bumps on the back of his skull that we are keeping an eye on.

Michele,

He will probably get more used to it when you can get him comfortable. So glad you found the information helpful and what a determined friend you have. You can always pass on my email addy to anyone who might need help. That is an open invite to any on the list. You can always hand out my email addy to anyone who needs breastfeeding help. :D

I don't know? One of the health nurses said maybe lymph nodes then started asking me about fevers or illness but he hasn't had a fever or been sick. As long as they don't get bigger we don't have to worry about them.

Michele,Sam has those bumps too - I thought they were lymph nodes??? Joan
