Guest guest
I guess I am coming from a different angle on this. I tried and failed at BFing my first two boys but have succeded with my next two. When I had my third boy (the first one to BF) my cousin also had a baby born the day before mine and was BFing. She quit at 6 weeks and I started to really be militant about it. I stopped myself. How would I have felt if women had made me feel bad when I failed with my first two? I totally believe that it is better to BF but I just can't bring myself to do more than encourage. I don't see the point in downing someone over it. W. Our 4th Boy!! Isaac 4/10/

Guest guest
I wanted to give my baby a bottle(Mikayla 3 months) becasue my last son I nursed for 16 months and he would not take a bottle at all, and this time I wanted to do some husband and wife time alone, and be able to leave the baby with grandma. I think I tried giving her a bottle once or twice a few weeks ago, and she would not ahve anything to do with it(my milk n the bottle) so I just figured oh well, it actually worked out really well not giving my son a bottle, I never had to wash a bottle, or worry about bottles, and he went straight to a cup. so that is what we will do this time too, except nurse a lot longer (at least if I ahve it my way we will, unless Mikayla has other plans) Beckie and Mikayla 2/17/00 > >Reply-To: breastfeedingegroups >To: breastfeedingegroups >Subject: Re: I joined another list >Date: Tue, 23 May 2000 09:25:08 -0500 > >I'm on a July Mommies list and have encountered the same thing. Guest guest
I'm on a July Mommies list and have encountered the same thing. Not quite as much apathy though, most are wanting to 'try' and see how it goes, several are planning on supplementing with bottles (some formula, some by pumping) but everyone on the list is pretty respectful of others and those of us who are staunch breastfeeders have gotten our say in, too. Personally, I don't plan to ever give this baby a bottle if I can help it, I plan to go from breast to a cup (knowing best laid plans can be thwarted.) Since I've had my 6 year old we've changed church's and I know a lot of people that I didn't know then, they are all being forewarned that I don't go anywhere without my baby for at least 6 months, nor do I leave them in nurseries or with baby sitters (I do have a 13 and 11 year old, I'm sure I'll do quick trips to the store when they are comfortable with baby care.) Guest guest
I also walk a fine line on some lists but I have learned how to handle it. Everyone on all my lists knows I'm very into bfing so it's no shocker when I dispute false info or give advice :-) I would stay on the list for awhile and see if you can be a positive influence. One of the moms on my March 2000 list had a very difficult time bfing at the beginning but really wanted to. I was the only person who was able to help her through it, most of the others would have been fine with her switching to formula or supplementing but I knew she didn't want to. I learned that the moms who had a previous bottle-fed baby who wanted to bottle-fed again could not be convinced otherwise but the new moms can be influenced if it's done nicely. I think my Feb-March 2000 babies lists are about 1/2 bfing and 1/2 bottle-feeding, most started out bfing, only two chose to bottle-fed from day one. If it's a mainstream list you have to expect to find moms who don't want to bf or who are misinformed. Maybe the best thing you can do is inform them over the next few months. Michele I joined another list of mom's due in December. I don't know if I can remain on the other list .. or if I can stay on and just bite my tongue. One mother wrote in saying she had had surgery on her breast as a teen and figured she wouldn't be able to breastfeed. She said that her MIL was very PRO breastfeeding and would give her a hard time about choosing not to. (this woman was very OK with not breastfeeding, no big deal to her)One Mom wrote about how she didn't see the big advantage for breastfeeding anyway other than that it's free. Another mother suggested that she simply lie to her mother and say that her milk never came in. Another said it was sad to see that a women couldn't make a decision to bottle-fed with being second guessed by all these breastfeeders.AHHHHHHHHH .. should I bite my tongue? I already wrote a few responses about how women need to be educated and it's not a choice you just pick out the air. Etc .. but I can easily see myself getting very defensive. Guest guest
I think we can encourage and inform without putting people down, especially realizing that it's completely their choice to make. I do try not to let people know if the information they are giving is false, gently, explain what they can do to correct a problem or potential problem, but then leave it at that unless what they are really looking for is someone to keep on them about it.
