Nystatin is not antibiotics. You are going to pick up the Nystatin tonight right? not antibiotics? I just want to be clear because antibiotics make thrush worse. You might not have thrush on your nipples yet but you could easily get it from him. Acidophilus are what are called probiotics they are the bacteria that your body needs to keep the yeast in check. Taking acidophilus yourself and giving it to your baby will help your bodies fight the yeast naturally. :D

Hi ,

They prescribed Nystatin, and told me to put some on my nipples as well. I have no discomfort though. Could it be that I don't have it (yet)? What is acidophilus? We are picking up the antibiotics this evening. Thanks for the help.

If he has it there is a good chance you will get it on your nipples. Did they give you Nystatin? They are supposed to treat you and the baby. There isn't a homeopathic remedy for thrush. A common suggestion is diluted apple cider vinegar on your nipples and swab baking soda and water in the babies mouth. If only he has it there is a chance that the Nystatin could work. It only works in about 50% of the cases. I would most definitely get some acidophilus and take it as well as mixing a small amount with your breastmilk and giving it to the baby. This will help restore the balance of bacteria/yeast in his body and yours. Did he receive antibiotics?

Good advice. I have the Jack Newman instructions on my website. It is

important to follow them carefully because it is very strong stuff. :D

What are the antibiotics for?? I think Wendi was asking if he had been on

antibiotics previous to the thrush .. as it is the antibiotics that can

cause

the yeast imbalance in the first place. We battled thrush several different

times last year. The Nystatin was sticky garbage if you ask me. It didn't

work at all. I was also directed to give it to DD 4Xs a day and on my

nipples too. It didn't do me any good. I finally got some Gentian Violet

(using Jack Newman's instructions) and boiled everything from toys to pump

parts. I washed sheets, pillow cases, baby clothes, wash cloths and towels

with a vinegar rinse. And put vinegar on my nipples. After 4 or 5 bouts

with the yeast monster .. we finally got rid of it .. and have been free for

about 5 months. :) KNOCK ON WOOD! I didn't get rid of it until I did all

these things .. every single one. Where ever the source was ... was finally

destroyed. This is a battle .. good

luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:)

Acidophilus is available at a health food store. The nystatin may work on his thrush it may not. It works about half of the time. The acidophilus and the nystatin will work together on the yeast but should be taken at different times.

Tylenol is not an antibiotic. Just to clarify -- Antibiotics are a very

specific spectrum of drugs, only given by prescription. They are made by

microorganisms to fight off certain other organisms (bacterial, not viral).

There are about 5 different groups of antibiotics that are commonly

prescribed. Some names you might recognize are amoxicillin (penisillin),

tetracycline, trimoxazole ... and many others.

I just wanted to make sure that you realized what antibiotics are. And that

during the treatment of thrush, you will probably want to make sure to avoid

them. You and baby! :)

You can find Gentian Violet at places like Rite Aide and it is over the

It can also be special ordered. It costs about $1.50 a bottle. By the way

this thread *did* get very confusing.

derek was diagnosed with thrush yesterday. they prescribed nystatin and

told me that he should DRINK it 4x a day. my response was shouldn't i be

brushing around his mouth, and they said " you can try, but it probably won't

work. have him drink it. " neither of us have been taking any antibiotics,

my comment was that it was a timing coincidence from when i started taking

the fenugreek (i've been having some side effects from it) and since i have

a strong family history of allergies it stood out in my mind.

the other thing was that derek must have caught my husband's virus, because

he is now running a fever for the past 20 hours or so, and i didn't know if

the tylenol i was giving him could have a detrimental effect on the

nystatin. i understand now that it can't.

i hope i've cleared this up. thanks to everyone for the advice on the

thrush. i forget who told me the Gentian Violet was a carcinogen, thanks,

i won't be using it unless all else fails.

thrush. i forget who told me the Gentian Violet was a carcinogen, thanks,

i won't be using it unless all else fails.

you know.. it said that it was carcinogenic in mice.. and you know how many

things cause cancer in mice?? just about everything in high doses..

I don't think we should scare ourselves so much over everything being

harmful.. thrush can be harmful and even fatal if a person has a lowered

immune system..

Anyway.. gentian violet worked for us.. and I have used nystatin also.. which

didn't work quite as well

Take care

Christi
