So the DR did not prescribe antibiotics for the thrush?? If he did, I

personally wouldn't use them.

Gentian Violet is an antifungal dye (1% solution in water). It is a dark

purple solution, that stains everything it touches! It kills the yeast and

can be used in baby's mouth, on your nipples and on the diaper rash. You

must use it sparingly and only for a course of once a day for 3 days.

As for the washing .. I used hot water wash/cold water rinse (with vinegar)

for most things. Warm water would probably do well .. but be sure to put the

vinegar in the rinse cycle. I actually wash my clothes with baking soda and

added the vinegar to both cycles.

All pacifiers must be sterilized .. all bottle nipples, bottles -- anything

that would come in contact with baby's mouth, even toys. Dishwasher does a

good job, but I boiled many things as well. My DD is on medication and it is

administered by plastic syringes .. I boiled them and rinsed in cold water

and vinegar also.

There has to be a source from what I understand. I never worried about

kisses, but I washed my hands often. And don't forget to keep your eye out

for the yeast diaper rash that can accompany thrush. You must treat both, or

it turns into a vicious cycle. If the thrush is not completely gone from

you, baby's mouth or diaper rash .. through contact .. the whole cycle can

start again. So, wash your hands thoroughly after each diaper change (with

more care than normal).

I hope you don't have to fight it over and over like I did .. it is possible

to get rid of it all in one shot!

(don't shoot, it's only for naps) also, stupid question, is it

i thought the nystatin was the antibiotic. i wasn't thrilled about having

to give it to derek 4x a day, so i was wondering if there was anything more

natural i could do. where do you find gentian violet? i've never heard of

it. will it take care of it totally? 1x a day for 3 days is better

would a low grade fever possible occompany any of this? derek felt warm to

me, i took his temp, and it's 101.5! i put in another call to the ped, but

of course, someone has to call me back!

i guess i have to get to washing then!

nystatin is. Some people do not like the oral suspension since it is

suspended in sugar water. Sugar feeds the yeast.

Antibiotics can be a causative factor in yeast infections because they

kill the good bacteria too.

There is a lot of info on the web about treatment; much more than your

doctor probably gave you. Yeast can be carried and passed around by

any member of the family including pets.

q-tip back into the bottle. Pour some into a smaller container to use

it and dump any left over, or use a new q-tip each time you dip! If is

very easy to contaminate the nystatin.

Nystatin is not antibiotics. You are going to pick up the Nystatin tonight right? not antibiotics? I just want to be clear because antibiotics make thrush worse. You might not have thrush on your nipples yet but you could easily get it from him. Acidophilus are what are called probiotics they are the bacteria that your body needs to keep the yeast in check. Taking acidophilus yourself and giving it to your baby will help your bodies fight the yeast naturally.

If he has it there is a good chance you will get it on your nipples. Did they give you Nystatin? They are supposed to treat you and the baby. There isn't a homeopathic remedy for thrush. A common suggestion is diluted apple cider vinegar on your nipples and swab baking soda and water in the babies mouth. If only he has it there is a chance that the Nystatin could work. It only works in about 50% of the cases. I would most definitely get some acidophilus and take it as well as mixing a small amount with your breastmilk and giving it to the baby. This will help restore the balance of bacteria/yeast in his body and yours. Did he receive antibiotics?
