Barbara,

Our Ian is only a freshman in high school ... but college is coming and I

have a few questions. Does Dartmouth pick up the tab for the interpretors and

the CART or are those services partially/totally paid for by the

student/parents?

I'm not sure what services Ian will need for college or even what he wants

to go to college to study. I expect he will not have the TOD, by then he should

be able to run his own academic life. His FMs may or may not still serve him

and I will fight the district in order to send them off to college with him

if they're needed.

What are the college's responsibilities for these kids? Are they the same as

the our schools now? I know Ian could have any service we choose if we were

willing to pay for it. I'm just trying to get an idea of what is coming.

Thanks for any info

Jill

Hi Jill - I'm nearly certain Dartmouth picks up the tab for both CART and

interpreter services. The ASL interpreter is on staff at Dartmouth - she's a

fulltime, paid employee. that being said, I don't know what other universities

have done...

Indeed, they were having trouble with CART initially to the point we hired a

work study student to go to class with the young woman who needs it to help

with hookups and to troubleshoot during class if there are problems. She seems

to take a lot of Anthropology classes as I see her down the hall sometimes!

Pompian is the disabilities coordinator here at Dartmouth - she's a warm,

wonderful person who has hearing loss herself. She really goes the extra mile

for her students - I'm really glad she's in my life!
