Guest guest
I need help and think I have hit rock bottom for the day. Basic history: My daughter was born in January.....very sick, 1 month in the hospital after birth, many visits since then. Due to her health situation, I left my job to stay at home with Hannah. My husband's company was initially very supportive and told him to take the month of January off to be with my daughter and I. At the end of April, they fired him. (This is the short story of how slimy his company ended up being.) Well, in Georgia, a company has 45 days to send you your COBRA information. In the mean time, you pay everything out of pocket, then pay for COBRA and COBRA pays you back. I don't have to tell any of you how expensive it would have been to pay out of pocket until the paperwork came and by then we wouldn't have been able to pay the $980 for the COBRA. So, my husband and I were both out of work, getting $400 a week from unemployment and eligible for Medicaid (effective May 1) My husband has been doing consulting work with a company since May 19. Now we make too much money for any kind of Medicaid or Peachcare (which is Georgia's insurance for children when you make too much for Medicaid but not enough to pay for personal/private insurance) We have Medicaid until June 30, at which time we have to find personal insurance. Due to my daughters health history, no insurance company will touch us. What do I do now? We see at least 2 specialists a month, she is on 4 very expensive prescriptions as well as a prescription formula. I have spent more time crying today than on some bad seizure days. For the first time in awhile with dealing with Hannah's many issues, I don't know where to turn. I have reached today's version of rock bottom. Unfortunately, I am sure some of you have been through similar situations...where do I go from here, and what will happen when my husband gets a job with benefits. Will they be able to turn us down? What does our future look like with this? Anxiously waiting for help (and thanks in advance!),
Guest guest
WE live in VA. My daughter was approved for a waiver called Elderly and Disabled waiver. This is mainly used to keep elderly out of nursing homes but after a bit of research there was not a clause that said the person must be elderly and disabled. We were then offered to use the CDPAS waiver (Consumer Directed Personal Assistant Services) I think that is what the initials stand for. The reason I am going into detail is because since she was found eligible for this waiver she can get Medicaid regardless of our income and resources. We are on the border financially. We do not qualify for any assistance because of income but all of our income goes into medical expenses. So as long as Madison does not have any financial resources in her name her social then she gets Medicaid. We have hidden a lot of money in our accounts for now. I think it has to be under $2000 or the child may be declined. So now we will soon get paid respite and Medicaid for backup services. I would initiate this process ASAP because anything to do with Medicaid is timely. Also if your daughter qualifies for a social worker through your county program then they may have emergency funding, grants or even other foundations that can help. For example our county may not cover medical bills but they will give money for new toys/adaptive equipment etc. So we just juggle the money around. We will use the money we were going to spend on a new toy or respite care for medicines and let the county cover the other expenses. It is very scary to think that we feel so helpless when it comes to providing care for our children. Sometimes and I joke that he should quit his job so we can have money to help with Madison. Start calling every agency you know and find out what your area has to offer. We have little local non profits that do so much for families in this type of situation. Good Luck! Insurance Help!
