Guest guest
Hi Rhonda, Could you tell me how much biotin and extra zinc you were giving your child for hair loss. I'm going to start the selenium, so should I do biotin and zinc, also? I don't know if my daughter could eat the brazil nuts if I crushed them - what was the quantity of nuts? Thanks, Heidi, future occupational therapist and single mom to (IS, Severely/Multiply Impaired, Ketokid since 12/03) and twin brother, (4 years), and big sis Madison (6). Guest guest
We've been giving our daughter, Shan, age 9, selenium 25mcg, for almost a year. She has been on the diet for over 2 years. She had hair loss after several months on the diet. Her hair began to grow back after giving her biotin, extra zinc, and Brazil nuts. Though her hair began to grow back, she had a permanent bang/fringe. It was obvious that not all of her hair was growing back especially in the front. After 1.5 years on the diet we ran out of Biotin and could not find a good source here in Australia. We also were no longer supplementing her with extra zinc and we quit giving her Brazil nuts. Because her ratio had been weaned down to around 1.5:1 we no longer felt we needed to give her the biotin, Brazil nuts and zinc. Her hair began to fall out again. We opted to try supplementing her with selenium tabs and that has been the " cure. " Her bang/fringe has disappeared and all of her hair is growing nicely. It is looking close to what her hair looked like pre-diet. If I had known at the beginning of the diet what I know now I would have supplemented with selenium and biotin at the beginning of the diet and tapered off the biotin as the ratio came down. This would have prevented the hair loss. Rhonda (mom to Shan, age 9, keto/Atkins at a .8 ratio....still weighing....over 2 years, doing great....repeated 3rd grade and her teacher says she's performing academically in the top part of the class....great difference compared to the last several years.....thanks to the diet...) Guest guest
Heidi, When Shan was 6 years old I either gave her 150mcg or 300mcg of Biotin. I can't remember the dose. The tablet was 300mcg. I'm thinking that we cut it in half. I would not worry about giving extra zinc. For I would start with 75-150mcg Biotin. But, you might want to look at her vitamins and see how much biotin it contains. Then according to how much is in it determine how much more she needs. There are also PH balanced shampoos that contain biotin at health stores. This might be helpful. I can't tell you if you should just do the selenium. I probably would do both. They are both essential nutrients that are usually on the low end in the vitamins. As for Brazil nuts, we tried to give 2 a day (6-7 gms).
