Guest guest
, I would suggest that for now you don't cut the carbs in half for the cream and don't bother factoring in the yogurt used for starter. The reason I'm suggesting that you don't cut the carbs in half is that I'm not quite convinced that half the carbs " get eaten up. " About 4weeks ago we quit giving Shan yogurt. She has been using the lactose free yogurt cream for her primary fat for about a year. She has been at a 1:1 ratio for many months and her ketones measured trace to small in the evening. When I took her off the yogurt and switched to using cheese and butter as her primary fat her ketones climbed (I'll have to confess that it probably had been a month since I checked her ketones). I discovered that after she had a high ketone induced awake seizure. I'm really wondering if the yogurt had more carbs in it than I was counting. I think the safest is to count all the carbs in the cream and watch her ketones closely. If they seem to climb after starting the yogurt cream then reduce the carbs in the cream by 1/4th. Another option would be to reduce the carbs by 1/2 and watch her ketones closely. If they drop too much then you know you need to factor in more carbs in the cream. You can make the same icecream with the yogurt. After the yogurt has heated for over 24 hours you can mix it with the oil and freeze. We would often freeze the yogurt (after mixing sweetner with it) so that Shan could have icecream. Rhonda Hi. I have now received my yogourtmet yogurt maker and I am ready to make some lactose free yogurt. But, of course, I have some more silly questions for you. Your message said to count the fat and protein the same as the cream and to cut the carbs in half. Do you need to do anything else to account for the " starter " or commercial yogurt you use as starter? I was hoping (if Langan will cooperate) to use this to completely replace the cream I give Langan with every meal. Is that what you have done? We usually give her one serving of " ice cream " , which is cream whipped until it is hard, mixed with oil and with some bickford flavoring. Is it possible to add the oil like that to the yogurt, or will that mess up the whole point? You can tell I am new at this lactose free thing.... Thanks again! , mom to Langan, 21 months old and keto kid since 11/03; med free since 4/2/04; still working on the seizures and dealing with a nasty case of acidosis. Guest guest
Thanks, Rhonda. I am hesitant to throw any new things into the mix but I really want to see if this will help her tummy. I can watch her ketones pretty carefully with the blood ketone machine, so I think I'll follow your advice and just leave the #s the same. It'll sure make it easier- won't have to have the dietician recalculate her meals. = ) Do you use the yogurt for cream in recipes, too, when they call for some cream (ie cheesecake, omeletes, etc)? You can tell I am not the master chef here, can't you? > , > > I would suggest that for now you don't cut the carbs in half for the cream > and don't bother factoring in the yogurt used for starter. Guest guest
I'm not very used to yoghurt-tmaking, but yoghurts have much less fat in them than cream (I mean weight for weight) We did try making yoghurt on a brief SCD phase but then we were off the diet so didn't have to calculate anything.
