Dear Joanne,

You may well know from my past posts that I've been on the Atkins Diet now for

well over one year, there's very little support for people wishing to try the

ketogenic diet in the UK, let alone for adults.

Typically my meals consist of cold/hot meats, scampi, cheese spread and

peanuts, in the main, I guess any foodstuffs selected within the scope of The

Atkins Diet would be alright, I don't know whether there's a specific measure

of ingredients you'd need to follow, just as long as the carb levels remained

low. How you can adapt Jordon to the Atkins I don't know I'm afraid, usually

Mums know best! lol.

I've never heard of total success for people with Epilepsy who are using the

Atkins Diet to control their seizures, and I'm therefore unsure whether the

patient could resume to an ordinary diet without any return of seizures.

Because of this I felt it important to stress to both my neurologist and local

doctor that I was subjecting myself to the Atkins long-term, in order that they

could both monitor if there was any side effects, specifically my blood levels,

for the need for supplimental additives.

I take Vitamin B6 (Folic Acid) tabs, Slow Sodium and Ginkgo Biloba, along

with my various Anti-Epileptic Drugs.

Best wishes,

Phil

Considering Atkins

Hi, I think we're getting to the end of the line with the KD as

Jordan is refusing to eat. He'll usually eat the meals with no

problem. Seems the problem is when he sees what other kids are

eating or when he's out in the community, it's hard to avoid all food

places. But he's been complaining and cheating.

The diet has helped some and I know we have a long way to go with

fine tuning but I don't think we'll get there. I'm so afraid as to

what might happen if we took him off the diet.

So, we're considering putting him on Atkins. I've read some old

posts and have some questions. I have the Atkins book and will have

to do some speed reading here soon. How do you figure out how many

carb grams they should have? Is 20 the amount regardless of wt/age?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Joanne

Hi Phil, Thanks for the info. I wish we could stay on the keto diet

but my son just wasn't buying it anymore. I was hoping that we could

buy more time so that at least we could get him off some of the meds.

So...we'll try Atkins and see what happens.

If I recall you also have a VNS right? Jordan also has one but it's

turned off as it wasn't working. Actually it worked for a while but

over time, it didn't work.

Wish us luck!
