HoH v. deaf

This IS a very thought provoking question ... and as Deana rightly said,

if we as parents are debating it, imagine how hard it is for others to

understand!

I have recently started using " deaf " to describe my 3 year-old, only

because it's shorter and easier to say - even though technically I would

consider her HoH since she gets great benefit from her aids. Her D/HH

teacher at preschool routinely calls all the aided kids in her class deaf

too. I think deaf brings with it a specific stereotype though - other

parents often ask me if Kate " can hear at all " - but that gives me the

opportunity to explain what I can about her loss, equipment, etc.

I thought it was interesting what Yuka said about her 15 year-old, and

the way he " identifies himself " - more for us beginners to think about as

our kids get older, and to make sure we let THEM choose what words are

used to describe their loss.

And yes, we too call Kate's aids her " ears " - always have. Even a

stranger at the pool last week asked " can she wear her 'ears' in the

water " ? - seems like it's pretty common.

, in CO

(5.4) - hearing

Kate (3.4) - mod/sev S/N bi-lat
