Re: squealing hearing aids

Hi, all. Thanks so much for the answers to my hearing aid questions last

week. I'm back with more. :)

(10 months) goes in to have his ear molds made this Wednesday. We've

been told he'll get a loaner pair of aids that day, to use while we're

waiting for his own to come in. When I wrote last week, I said he had been

diagnosed with mild hearing loss bilaterally. But when the audi's report

came in the mail yesterday, it actually said " moderate " loss. The ABR showed

a 50 dB loss bilaterally to clicks (which she adjusted to 40dB, she said,

because of the difference between an ABR & a booth test?) and a 60dB loss in

the low frequencies. She didn't test high frequencies because Stevie woke

up. This concerns me a bit--our own non-clinical observations here at home

gave us the impression that he hears low tones better than high tones.

An infant hearing loss specialist from Early Intervention called me and went

over the audi's report, and she too described it as moderate loss. So that

was a bit of a surprise.

But on to my question--

I'd appreciate hearing more about the squealing, so I know what to expect.

Stevie also has neurological issues/motor function delay, so he isn't

crawling yet and spends a whole lot of his time in my arms. I'm hugging him

all day! When and why does the squealing happen? Doesn't it hurt the child's

ears? I'm a bit dismayed to think of an unpleasant noise inhibiting our

hugs...hugs are what we DO!

Fnny...Lindsi, who is profoundly deaf, also never crawled. She only

buyy scooted & started walking at about 15-16 months.

She was adopted at 10 months & I've always attributed her utt

scooting to he having no upper body strength (at that stage of

developement), but maybe there's more to it???????
