Guest guest Posted October 21, 2009 Report Posted October 21, 2009 Hi Ida, I understand how being a new mom to this situation is overwhelming and I also understand all too well about hard economic times so Early Steps is great in that way. As a therapist I have so many moms tell, now that they know what they know and how malleability and age play an important role in therapeutic progress, they regret wasting months and months on Early Steps waiting list. My suggestion to your friend is to get an eval ASAP and pay for it if she has to. A private pay eval is much more thorough anyway. The sooner we know the more we can do. It’s worth spending the money. Also, regarding Early Steps, I am amazed at how persistence pays. That’s just my two cents. Wish her the best of luck, Samira I hope the child gets services before he turns 3. Sometimes Early Steps has required proof of residency like a fpl bill. This only delays services and is not permitted under the IDEA. They are also a time limit between when the parents are seen and when services begin. Heifferon To: sList From: thecohanes@... Guest guest Posted October 23, 2009 Report Posted October 23, 2009 This is probably the best time for the parent to self-educate herself and become familiar with Part C. Although Early Steps will mimic the federal law they don't always follow it as it is written. If they did there would be no need for Complaints. The parent_to_parents website at yahoogroups.com has a lot of reading material in its link section and it has advocates online. Parents/advocates can email me to get into the website. Guest guest Posted October 24, 2009 Report Posted October 24, 2009 What about the wait for specialty clinic? There were red flags at my daughter’s initial Early Steps evaluation (Sept 09). They referred her for their specialty clinic to get evaluated for Autism but I was given an appt that is 7 months after the initial one (April 10). Its crazy! They did give me speech services but did not want to give me anything more until this eval. Lots of time missed out on. When I pressed my case manager she said their hands are tied because that is the next available appt but I was free to go outside and do one with my private pay – referred me to Dan Marino. She also said they like to wait to do things when the kids are closer to 2. It is so frustrating!!! I am trying to get services through a back door as I refuse to wait until then to start services for concerns that are showing up now. Guest guest Posted October 24, 2009 Report Posted October 24, 2009 , their hands are tied because they are dong the tying. I just love the private pay option! The very first thing you have to do is to communicate with Early Steps only by email and insist they do the same. "If it isn't in writing, it isn't said." Then you have to sit down and read the Part C section of Early Steps regarding evaluations and specifically the appropriate time periods for services. Then you email your coordinator with the violation and let her respond by email. And what is this crap about waiting until the child is closer to two years of age? Why not wait until the child is 2 1/2 years old and then only be responsible for six months of service? As you can see this type of attitude makes my blood boil. Early and intensive intervention is so important. Your child needs it and you need to get it for him. If you want me to help, you can email me. I just love the private pay option! The very first thing you have to do is to communicate with Early Steps only by email and insist they do the same. " If it isn't in writing, it isn't said. " Then you have to sit down and read the Part C section of Early Steps regarding evaluations and specifically the appropriate time periods for services.
