Guest guest Posted February 3, 2006 Report Posted February 3, 2006 I don't know what to tell you about the other things but voice lessons (singing) will help the vocal chords. This is why singers who don't practice for a while lose their range, vocal chords act a lot like muscles and need to be exercised. This is why my range sucks now. Just singing along to songs on the radio can help. Even if you know the notes are to high or to low for you, just practice and always breathe from your diaphragm (lung support). If you lay down on the floor straight with your hands at your sides, that is how you should breath/posture standing up. It might help the voice. Total Thyroidectomy Hi about 4yrs ago I had my Thyroid removed.Ever since I have still have trouble swallowing food and even saliva.I now am having trouble breathing and was told it is because of Abductor spasm of the Larynz. The specialist said it is caused by stress but after checking it out on the net it seems quite common after a total thyroidectomy.I was just wondering if anyone else had had this problem and what if any thing was done about it.When I was 5 it was discovered I had a goitre and it grew ever since, the Doctors where always amazed how big it was.(30yrs is a lot of growing)I am wondering if it was left there too long and it has stretched all the muscles and vocal cords? If anyone has any ideas it would be much appreciated. Guest guest Posted February 3, 2006 Report Posted February 3, 2006 Trouble swallowing usually has to do with the laryngeal nerve damaged during TT surgery. People are put in physical therapy to learn to swallow. There are some operations/procedures tried, to get the nerve workable again. Breathing - have you had it imaged ? I wonder if tissue has grown back and squeezing your throat. Mine was just starting to squeeze my esophagus, plenty of room, but doc said it's sensitive and even a small reduction in the esophagus's size made it think it wasn't moving enough air, I had breathlessness. Was your thyroid removed because of cancer ? If so, I wonder if the breathing problem might indicate cancer spread to the lungs. Breathing - did docs look into if you started any new meds and the breathing might be an allergic reaction symptom ? jane us > > Hi about 4yrs ago I had my Thyroid removed.Ever since I have still > have trouble swallowing food and even saliva.I now am having trouble > breathing and was told it is because of Abductor spasm of the Larynz. > The specialist said it is caused by stress but after checking it out > on the net it seems quite common after a total thyroidectomy.I was > just wondering if anyone else had had this problem and what if any > thing was done about it. > > When I was 5 it was discovered I had a goitre and it grew ever since, > the Doctors where always amazed how big it was.(30yrs is a lot of > growing)I am wondering if it was left there too long and it has > stretched all the muscles and vocal cords? > > If anyone has any ideas it would be much appreciated. > > Thanks Kim Quote
Guest guest Posted February 5, 2006 Report Posted February 5, 2006 Hi Kim, It sounds to me like its time to fire this Doctor and get a new Doctor that knows how to treat Thyroid problems, Throat problems... Perhaps a Ear, Nose and Throat Specialist is what you need at this time. However, to be thinking that the current doc is going to tell you that the symptoms are all in your head is time for him to be fired!!! Remember, you are the person that has to live with this...not him...you hired him to be a caring and careful Doctor, if he isn't doing his job then feel free to kick him to the street and hire a doc that will listen and treat you like you deserve!!! Guest guest Posted February 5, 2006 Report Posted February 5, 2006 question-does anyone ever feel, for lack of a better term, a 'clicking feeling' in your throat when you swallow? i had a total thyroidectomy and had no complications as far as speaking, swallowing, etc. however, after i had my son i went through a period of time where i was having alot of trouble swallowing, to the point where i feared eating, because i literally felt like i was choking on everything i ate or drank. the doc said that this along with the clicking feeling was reflux, they assumed triggered by carrying such a large baby, and that i had damaged my esophagus. i was put on protonix, which is a very good rx med for reflux, and it didnt do much good. however, when i added cytomel and got my meds in check, the choking symptoms vanished, though i still have the other feeling. there were some posts awhile back regarding our slowed digestion causing reflux for some. i never until now related the thyroidectomy with that clicking. any ideas? -- In The_Thyroid_Support_Group , " gossimerwingz " wrote: > > Hi Kim, > It sounds to me like its time to fire this Doctor and get a new > Doctor that knows how to treat Thyroid problems, Throat problems... > Perhaps a Ear, Nose and Throat Specialist is what you need at this > time. > However, to be thinking that the current doc is going to tell you > that the symptoms are all in your head is time for him to be fired!!! > > Remember, you are the person that has to live with this...not > him...you hired him to be a caring and careful Doctor, if he isn't > doing his job then feel free to kick him to the street and hire a > doc that will listen and treat you like you deserve!!! > > Gossimer > > > > > > Hi Jane, > > The doctor called it Abductor spasm of the Larynx.I didn't have > cancer of > > the Thyroid just a huge Thyroid.I haven't had it imaged yet but > will get it > > done soon.He just stuck that tube down my nose and had a look. Was > really > > frustrated cause he said it was due to stress didn't want to hear > about the > > TT.The worst problem is that at times I can't breath and he's > trying to tell > > me it's in my head. > > > > Kim > Quote

Guest guest Posted February 6, 2006 Report Posted February 6, 2006 I have the clicking feeling and I was going to post a question about it. I get it on the days when I take my pill late or my hormones are slow to kick in. It just feels like a little popping feeling when I swallow. It doesn't impede my swallowing, although I do have a problem swallowing large vitamins (who doesn't) sometimes. andrea Re: Total Thyroidectomy question-does anyone ever feel, for lack of a better term, a 'clicking feeling' in your throat when you swallow? i had a total thyroidectomy and had no complications as far as speaking, swallowing, etc. however, after i had my son i went through a period of time where i was having alot of trouble swallowing, to the point where i feared eating, because i literally felt like i was choking on everything i ate or drank. the doc said that this along with the clicking feeling was reflux, they assumed triggered by carrying such a large baby, and that i had damaged my esophagus. i was put on protonix, which is a very good rx med for reflux, and it didnt do much good. however, when i added cytomel and got my meds in check, the choking symptoms vanished, though i still have the other feeling. there were some posts awhile back regarding our slowed digestion causing reflux for some. i never until now related the thyroidectomy with that clicking. any ideas? -- In The_Thyroid_Support_Group , "gossimerwingz" wrote:>> Hi Kim,> It sounds to me like its time to fire this Doctor and get a new > Doctor that knows how to treat Thyroid problems, Throat problems...> Perhaps a Ear, Nose and Throat Specialist is what you need at this > time. > However, to be thinking that the current doc is going to tell you > that the symptoms are all in your head is time for him to be fired!!!> > Remember, you are the person that has to live with this...not > him...you hired him to be a caring and careful Doctor, if he isn't > doing his job then feel free to kick him to the street and hire a > doc that will listen and treat you like you deserve!!!> > Gossimer> > > >> > Hi Jane,> > The doctor called it Abductor spasm of the Larynx.I didn't have > cancer of> > the Thyroid just a huge Thyroid.I haven't had it imaged yet but > will get it> > done soon.He just stuck that tube down my nose and had a look. Was > really> > frustrated cause he said it was due to stress didn't want to hear > about the> > TT.The worst problem is that at times I can't breath and he's > trying to tell> > me it's in my head.> > > > Kim> Quote
Guest guest Posted February 6, 2006 Report Posted February 6, 2006 I've got it too, but I'm thinking more along the lines of maybe a nodule encroaching upon my windpipe or esophagus. Haven't had pictures of my thyroid in over 9 yrs or more. Re: Re: Total Thyroidectomy I have the clicking feeling and I was going to post a question about it.
