Guest guest
Does any other kind of walking bother him, or just grocery shopping? I suppose it could be possible, especially if other shopping is troublesome too. It could be the hard floors, or the slow walking, where as running and playing on grass, etc is easier on his legs? I'm just grasping at straws. ellen does anyone else ever hear this? " I don't want to go grocery shopping. My legs always get tired from grocery shopping. " I hear this all the time, and just heard again this minute. Could his leg tone be so bad that walking a store DOES hurt him? Guest guest
Could it also be growing pains? Atlanta is NT and has no problems anywhere but she complains of leg pain that can only be chalked up to growing pains. Yes, I asked the ped about it and she told me, after finding nothing wrong, that some kids do feel pain while growing. Of course they fall down and lie around frequently too, but still....I think they are bored by shopping and that they have trouble with all the sensory stuff. And they'd rather be at home running rampant.

Guest guest
yes, it really could. both kailey and james have the same problem, james more, actually. i know it seems ridiculous when they're able to hop around the house for hours, but it's true. Guest guest
-- I know what you mean. Shopping makes very hungary too, esp when the burger king is down the street from the store. Guest guest
I hear this from greggory. He tells me all sorts of thing that i beleive at some times and dont at other times. He will tell me that it takes forever and he is sooo tired and he hurts and blah, blah, blah! But when it comes to doing things like running around at a park or playing or shopping at the toy store he is just fine. Kid stuff. Jacquie H does anyone else ever hear this? Guest guest
>> Could his leg tone be so bad that walking a store DOES hurt him?>> Well, theoretically, yeah, it could....does he complain when running around on the playground at school? What does the OT say about his strength and tone (two separate things)? Another thought is that if the store is hectic, he may have a tougher time making his way through it on his own power...it may be much more " work " to him than just walking. If he is trying to cope with lots of people, full aisles, stacks of " stuff " everywhere, unpredictable things coming around corners, numerous smells, etc...he may be overwhelmed and not be able to motor plan as well...so walking would feel like work. This is why I have sit in one of those kiddie carts when we go; takes off a lot of stress for him, and he has enough to contend with when we go out. Guest guest
if it is just happening in the grocery store maybe it isn't a muscle thing but a sensory thing that eric is having difficulty describing. could it be that the expanse of the store, the florescent lights, the crowds of people, the smells etc are causing a sensory overload which may feel like a dull ache which eric associates with the activity (walking) as opposed to the environment (store). i know shopping is difficult for all kids but our kids in particular can have a rough time with all of the sensory stimuli. rowan used to always cover his ears in the produce section - the vegetable sprinklers and their low hum used to irritate him. just a thought. michelle mg does anyone else ever hear this? Guest guest
I'm wondering if it's because they are standing still more, less movement than usual when they are on their feet maybe? is thrilled to go for walks in the woods or in the neighborhood. Places that restrict his actual movement are the ones that cause a problem. In toy stores, maybe it's because they are so occupied looking at things that they don't focus on the standing part....although mine are also known to sit in the aisles there, too.
