Guest guest
Hi! My name is Amy and my 20 month old son, Jake, started the keto diet this week! We are excited, nervous and scared and I'm hoping to get lots of good information from this site. I know one Mom already (hi !) and look forward to getting to know other parents - maybe even those who started the diet with us at Hopkins this week!! Jake was born 8 weeks premature and had multiple complications, which resulted in severe developmental delay, hypothyroidism, vision delays, hearing loss and, of course, seizures. He spent the first year of his life on phenobarbitol and tegretol and we became interested in the diet after we started weaning the pheno and noticed the difference in his alertness and development. He has a g- tube and that has actually made starting the diet easier for us. He is on a ratio of 3:1, 750ml of fluid, 800 calories. In a couple of weeks, we will try introducing some meals in place of the formula because he did eat by mouth quite a bit before starting keto. The first couple of days have been rough. Jake has been lethargic and was doing quite a bit of gagging and dry heaving after each feeding. He has a nissen, a surgical procedure which prevents him from vomiting, otherwise I think we would have lost most of the formula. I will end this for now, but wanted to say hello and I am very excited about getting to know you all! Take care, Amy, mom to Jake
