Guest guest
Hi everyone, Thank you so much for all the wonderful info I get from this group. My daughter is still pretty young and we don't know much about the whole hearing loss stuff. We know a lot, but not much in terms of other people's experiences, which seem to prove the best in terms of knowledge. I just have a couple of questions, as I do every now and then. First of all...my daughter's loss is severe to profound in her left ear and completely profound in her right ear. She has one aid, for her left ear adn we are in the process of getting an aid for her right ear. We are looking into getting her a cochlear implant at johns hopkins (we were turned down at children's national medical center b/c she hears too well, evidently). CNMC told us that if she were an adult they'd implant her but since she's a child, they won't. I don't quite get that reasoning, but from everything I've heard, I should be glad they turned us down. Anyhow...we are waiting for s Hopkins response on whether they will even look into her case further. Her loss is 70dB and greater in her left ear and 95dB in her right ear....she does okay aided, but no superfantastic. What do you all think? Will they say yes or no? What is your experience with CI's (those of you who's kids have them)? I've heard than many kids reject them when they get older. I'm not so concerned about this because if Tessa decides to reject hers, than it's her decision. She will most likely have sign to fall back on. Also, I wanted to ask about successfulness of aiding a profound ear. We have known about Tessa's loss for about 5 months now. She is signing pretty well, and knows probably 60 signs. She's almost 2. We really want to start working more with her on speech, but wanted to make sure she got some language into her before her " window " was up. I just got her to blow into a whistle and she is making more speech sounds. She has just started babbling more. Thanks for all the info. We really appreciate being able to learn through your experiences. Sara Oh yeah...does anyone know of any ASL classes you can take online? I'd like to get more proficient at ASL, but don't know enough about it...we are just learning signs right now. Thanks. _________________________________________________________________ Get ready for school!
