Re: series of beats

I wanted to welcome Beanie and ask a couple questions. I too get the

noticeable 'beats' and sometimes they'll come just once or twice, then other

times for hours. When they come for hours, I get worn down fast. There are

also days when I don't feel the beats or anything, but generally feel very

tired. I have also been experiencing something rather scary; I've had

episodes where my heart beats REALLY fast and I notice it pounding away,

then I feel dizzy, sick, sweaty and almost pass out. Last time it happened I

lost my breath, really scary! Thankfully all that passed in about 5 minutes.

Then it calmed down again somewhat. I'm wondering if it isn't something else

going on in there besides Afib. Does anyone have any opinions? I'm on

Metoporol and aspirin and have a cardio appointment next week.

Hi, Beanie and Laurie,

I think what you are mostly experiencing are ectopics (PACs and/or

PVCs). Yes, they can happen a lot without leading to afib.

Everyone, whether they are prone to afib or not, has numerous PACs

and sometimes PVCs every day.

Beta blockers are supposed to reduce the frequency of ectopics, and

magnesium (my doc recommends one Slow Mag tablet a day) seems to help

do this also.

In order to be sure, however, you need to wear a 24 hour Holter

monitor so the doc can see what is happening.

I really, really dislike ectopics, myself.

I think you need to ask for a monitor so the doc knows what is going

on and can do something about it. This is what I felt like when I

had the SVT we have been talking about in the recent threads, but

thankfully mine is very infrequent. If I were having it often, I

would talk to my doc and see what he says - ablation or whatever. If

it happens often, there would be a potential problem with driving,

etc.

For what it's worth in the meantime, my previous doc said about SVT

that it wouldn't kill me and if I fainted I'd come to without outside

intervention, but that I should definitely call 911 so they could get

me out of it if I could. I was worried since I live alone.
