Guest guest
Hi, I posted a couple of weeks ago and recieved some useful advice on what to expect when starting the diet, thanks to all those that responded. Since then my daughter has been on the diet and seems to be ok with the meals, infact she quite likes them which is a relief. However were having dificulty getting ketone readings at the correct time. We're using ketone sticks and simply placing cotton wool in her nappies. Squeezing wet cotton wool first thing in the morning and late at night is not the most pleasant experience but we understand it's vital to get readings. Our problem is that quite often she's dry when we're supposed to measure the ketones. My question is do we have to measure early am and late pm and why? The other issue is her levels she appears to fluctuate between 4 and 16 on the scale, mostly nearer the 8 - 16 mark, is his to high and is it a dangerous level ? We had been on the 4:1and recorded very high 16+ levels and have now moved to the 3.5:1 how long should we maintain this ratio before considering moving to the 3:1any thoughts on the matter would be appreciated. best wishes to all adam, gail and amelie
Guest guest
Just keep an eye out for any other symptoms of her being overly ketotic...... panting breath, flushed red face, lethargy, strong acetone smell on the breath, refusing to drink or eat, severe reflux symptoms, things like that. In the beginning, ketones will tend to range all over the place. Ideally, eventually, you'll want to see them hanging out right between 80 and 160 all the time........ but 160+ can be too much for many kids. Make sure she's drinking enough. I know it can be tough when they are dry at the time you're " supposed " to check ketones...... just do the best you can. Best of luck to you. Are you seeing some improvement in seizures?
