Guest guest
" Thinking about it, I would think that if you have been given orders by a doctor to give zantac or prilosec through a j tube that digestive enzymes would not be an issue. Digestive enzymes can be given during a meal. When we first began digestive enzymes we gave them to our daughter during the meal. They worked. When we learned from Patti that they work best when given prior to a meal we switched to giving them right before eating with water. Sometimes we forgot and gave them during the meal. What I'm wondering is if it might be worth trying to mix the digestive enzymes in your formula right before feeding. I would not try this if you are using a pump. Are you using a pump? If the food is not going into the stomach then you definitely would not want to put the enzymes into the stomach. I have no idea how long food stays in the jejunum. This would actually be a good question for a good homeopathic doctor. Your gastro doctor may even be able to help you with this. Just trying to brain storm with you, Rhonda Re: digestive enzymes , Hmmm...... I don't know the answer on whether the enzymes can bypass the stomach. I know it's easy to give them through a g-tube. In fact, I think Rhonda posted about this earlier today. But, am not sure if enzymes should be mixing with the food IN the stomach first, before passing along down the line. Not sure on that. I do know that neither Zantac or Prilosec worked for Katera....... but enzymes, plus lowering the ratio slightly, sure did turn things around. What's his ratio? I know he hasn't been on the diet long...... but if he has super high ketones and reflux, I'd suspect he's on a high one. You said his glucose has been high, though..... and as I said, I think cutting calories back a bit might help out there. Kinda depends on his seizure control as to whether you are feeling the need to tweak things and make this work best for him.
Guest guest
Rhonda, Thanks for your help. Yes, we use a pump with ; he is on the pump about 18 hours a day. We cannot turn the pump up past 85 as it causes him to vomit and may having some " dumping. " I don't know how long food stays in the jejunum either, that's a good question, although I have been told not to give more than 15ml at a time in his j tube as the jejunum can only hold a small amount at a time. I know you mentioned about giving 30ml of water with the enzyme..this would be too much at one time. I have a call in to his GI doctor and am curious what he will say about the enzymes. He's all for natural and homeopathic remedies if they work. Prior to the diet I had on cell salts (minerals) and it REALLY helped the reflux; the dietician felt he didn't need the extra minerals while being on the KetoCal, feels this is sufficient, but I just wonder about putting him back on the cell salts. Thanks again, ' Re: digestive enzymes , Hmmm...... I don't know the answer on whether the enzymes can bypass the stomach. I know it's easy to give them through a g-tube. Guest guest
', I would be interested in what your GI has to say. I'm thinking that it would not work due to the low volume that the jejunum can handle. You would need a machine that gives 1 granule app. very 2 min. that works along with the pump. I would restart the cell salts. If something has worked in the past then I would not hesitate to going back to it, especially something like cell salts. Cell salts was a topic at some point on this list over the past year or 2. There seems to be some good benefits from it. If your son was benefiting from it I wouldn't quit it. If I remember right, cell salts have benefits that you get from bathing in it. Obviously, the nutrition is not giving him the same benefits that he experienced from the cell salts. Too bad that the dietician had you stop them. Rhonda Rhonda, Thanks for your help. Yes, we use a pump with ; he is on the pump about 18 hours a day.
