Montessori can work. Our boys are perfect examples. They have been in a

Montessori program since the age of 3. is now in 5th grade and

will be starting the 3rd grade in the fall.

During pre-school, they attended the local program at the hearing and speech

center for 1/2 day and the Montessori program the other half day. When it came

time to transition into elementary school, everyone (all our professionals)

steered us toward public school where the boys would have " more resources

available " (e.g. teacher of the deaf, etc). Well my husband and I had always

wanted our children to have a Montessori educational foundation (thru 6th grade

at least). While the professionals were telling us " it won't work " it was

really because they had never had a family try it before.

Anyway, we stayed in the Montessori program and both boys are excelling.

just had his standardized tests at the end of 4th grade and is

performing at or above grade level in all categories (his lowest was vocabulary

which was no surprising to us, but it was on grade level).

Both boys are profoundly deaf and hear with cochlear implants.

Just wanted to let the group know that Montessori can work if the situation is

right.

I was very seriously considering a Montessori for our daughter for

the summer time. I went to the four in our area, and they are so

lovely with lots of hands on activities. But as I watched the

group, and as our daughter did the morning activities I left very

sure that it would not work for her.

I was sad, but realized that she needed a strong language based

program, lots of circle time and group activities where a teacher

would always pull her near to talk with her in a group.

Some daycares I visited were terrible, very very loud and just too

busy.

We did find a nice daycare that had a small group and were very

excited to do work with our daughter, making the activities good

vocabulary building times. It has worked out well- as temporary

setting.

She is only there a few hours now and then, cause she is with me or

in speech therapy very day!

Montessori is great, and i love some of the ideas, but definity not

for some children that are very language delayed. Maybe when she is

much older and has caught up with her vocabulary>. I don't know.
