Hello all,

I just joined the site. My 4 yr old, Devlin is HOH with Mild hearing

loss in both ears, high frequency. My younger son, Aidan, is hearing.

I have just begun ready through the posts. However, I do have

questions. I have already made the secision to do some home-

schooling for my son, along side his regular schooling that starts

in September. He is going into JK. Is it hard the first little

while? Dev was diagnosed just last week. He does not have hearing

aids at this time. We do not even know if he will need them (though

I think he does). He is also in speech therepy due to his speech

being so behind compared to a child his age.

Dev is already shy, and doesn't like to be too far away from me in

an environment he is not used to. Last week we went to the

kindergarden class to visit, and he wouldn't even go in at 1st. I

had to go in with him before he would step inside the door!

Any suggestions would be great. Even with potty training (1yr of

training, and we are almost done - finally). Speak to all soon!

It is not uncommon for a child with even a mild hearing loss to be shy and not

want to socialize. It is very possable he can't understand much of what is

being said and so he may feel left out and scared. My son has a mild hearing

loss of around 30 dB bilaterally but he also recently tested at 40 dB in the low

frequencies recently, the audiologist ignored this saying he had normal hearing.

Most consider normal hearing in a child who is learning language 15 dB but for

some reason all the places I go they want to say that 30 dB is boarderline

normal and they wouldn't aid unless the low frequency hearing is more than 25

dB, which his is but they still argue with me. I would seriously suggest

hearing aids, but more so an FM system to help with speech. Currently my son

won't wear the FM so we purchased a soundfield system to amplify the speakers

voice.
