Guest guest Posted January 8, 2006 Report Posted January 8, 2006 Hi Ellie: Is it confirmed that the steroids in the anti-nausea meds given before chemo are partially reason for weight gain and is a lot of that weight gain due to fluid retention? I do not show any signs of fluid retention, however, I went from 150 to 170 from the start of my chemo on 12/1 to current. I am only 5'4" and most comfortable at 135-145. I still have two more treatments to go and don't even want to think about the pushing the 200# mark. Thank you for your efforts to raise money for breast cancer cure. Jane in Pittsburgh, PA Let me introduce myself Hello,First and formost let me say that I respect and admire all of you who are going through breast cancer treatments and/or are suvivors of breast cancer. My grandmother was diagnosed 2 years ago and after a lumpectomy and radiation is doing wonderfully!! If anyone has any questions about medications, side effects, etc. Please feel free to ask, I will gladly answer any questions I can and research answers for you if I don't know the answer immediately. Guest guest Posted January 9, 2006 Report Posted January 9, 2006 Hello, The weight gain you see is only partially due to fluid retention. Steriods also cause your body's natural chemical cortisol to increase which can lead to weight gain mostly around your middle and also could cause your face to look rounder than normal. Fortunately, these symptoms generally go away a few months after the medication has been discontinued. Guest guest Posted January 10, 2006 Report Posted January 10, 2006 I'm wondering if many of you take the anti nausea pills. I don't take them, they make me so constipated that even with softeners I'm still in pain. Sorry to be so graphic but, I'd rather deal with the sick feeling in my stomach unless I start really retching, which I haven't yet. We'll see with Taxol, what happens. But I also haven't gained any excess weight, I've pretty much stayed the same. I wonder if it's because I don't continue the ant nausea meds after I leave the cancer center? Any thoughts. I'm what I think is mildly over weight. Obesity and stage 2 diabetes runs in my family. If I can keep my weight problems to a minimum I will.
