Diarrhea and Giving Yogurt

Hi, Kristan is on antibiotics for an ear infection and now has

diarrhea. So far she is handling it ok and isn't getting

dehyrdrated, she is only taking about 5 oz of her 7 oz bottles (4 a

day). I try to get water in her too to make up for the fluid loss.

Her doctor mentioned getting yogurt into her. I've read in previous

posts that the bacteria in yogurt helps when you have diarrhea.

Here's the stupid question, the yogurt would need to be calculated

into the diet, right? I have a call into the dietitian about giving

her yogurt, but then Kristan seems to be in good spirits even with

the diarrhea and she doesn't seem to be getting too dehyrdrated, so

I'm thinking maybe I shouldn't be trying yogurt.

Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance,

Satnam, mom to Kristan, 16 months

Keto Kid since August 2003

The antibiotics kills the good bacteria as well as the bad bacteria. You

have bacteria in the intestines to digest food. If they are killed off

with the antibiotic then you can get diarrhea. The bacteria in natural

yogurt will replenish the bacteria in the intestines and clear up the

diarrhea. You will have to wait until after the antbiotic is finished to

start the yogurt.

If you give a small amount of yogurt, say 1/2 a teaspoon 3 times a day,

then you probably won't need to calculate it in to the diet. The effects

of the bacterial infection and the antibiotic on the diet are much, much

greater. I certainly wouldn't recalculate meals just to give some yogurt

for a day or two.

You can also give acidophilus as a source of good bacteria. I like to

use the yogurt. Just a preference.
