Guest guest
Just a little " nurse " note about ear infections. There are two types of ear infections, one in the outer ear canal, the other in the middle ear, behind the ear drum. The outer ear canal infection is called otitis externa and the middle ear infection is called otitis media. The outer ear infection is treated with ear drops, usually a combination of a steroid and an antibiotic. The middle ear infection is the one that the article talks about, and the type where you have tubes and drainage, and treatment with antibiotics. When you have otitis externa, it is near impossible to wear hearing aids. It varies with otitis media. And some kids will have both kinds at the same time, though this is not usually the case. I'm thinking that even if the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends not using antibiotics right away for otitis media in most children, they (pediatricians and ENTs) will give antibiotics to kids with pre-existing hearing loss since they are at much higher risk for problems. Hope this is helpful, (RN in GA)
