Just a few observations from the effort in Baton Rouge, LA:

There have been many discussions on this list on the lack of unity of

EMS professionals. While we can be our worse enemies at times, the

present circumstances can bring out the best in not only the people but

the systems we work in. With all of the talk about red tape and

bureaucracy causing problems with this incident I would like to share an

experience with you: On Tuesday the 29th of Aug a private service

ambulance had mechanical problems after dropping off patients at the

PMAC triage center. A tow truck was dispatched the vehicle sent to a

city owned garage and promptly repaired by a city mechanic. The rule

book and paperwork were promptly thrown out of the window. Sounds like a

no brainer considering the circumstances but imagine that happening any

other time.

I have been personally responsible for millions of dollars of equipment

and services and never once have I had to stop and fill out the proper

form, in triplicate with all of the approved signatures. We are truly

in " make it happen " mode - anyone who was in the military will know what

that means.

Interservice rivalry, FD vs. 3rd service, private vs. public has been

where it should always be, out of the window.

I have heard that there are a lot of media reports regarding the lack of

a response from outside of the state. This week I have personally seen

ambulances from over two dozen states. Many of them have been here

since Tuesday and Wednesday less than the 72 hours that federal

help/outside help would normally arrive. Have seen multiple air

ambulances both federal/local government and civilian. Can't verify it

but I have been told that over 300 have been here since last Wed.

When asked about rescue assets being turned away after being requested

by the state or the federal JTF, LTG Honore, the JTF commander,

responded on CNN with the following " that's a bunch of BS " along with a

lot of more colorful language that I would not want to repeat here.

While I have heard a lot of criticism about responders having problems

getting approval to enter the state I can assure you that responders are

here, at least from 30 different states passing thru Baton Rouge. Very

few freelancers (except for media personalities with TV cameras) are in

the area. Biggest problem with accepting more responders is that a

large percentage of the population of the Greater New Orleans area will

soon be in your community and they will need your help at home. Even

responders who are able to bring enough supplies to last for 15 - 30

days will take up space that can be used for someone or something else.

Secure areas for staging such supplies are at a premium, housing areas -

even if you don't mind or expect to sleep on a floor somewhere that

floor space can and may be used for something else.

On a personal note I would like to say again THANK YOU TEXAS. Much of

my extended family are now temporary residents in your state. From one

responder to another please take care of them.
