Not all oils are interchangeable. Compare labels and stats. It depends on how

sensitive your child is to small changes. I found that Katera was not

particularly sensitive so I didn't need to worry about it and pretty much used

all oils interchangeably..... but that won't work for everyone. You should be

able to substitute sunflower oil or coconut oil straight across for puritan.....

but do read labels and just see how many calories, fat gms. You won't want to

use much flax oil in proportion to other oils..... depends on how much oil

you're giving in a meal, but I personally don't think more than about a

tablespoon a day of flax. I wouldn't do a whole meal with just flax as the fat

component. Coconut and or olive oil could be used in higher proportion. Flax oil

has a stronger taste...... I always mixed it in coconut milk and added

sweetener. DO NOT HEAT flax oil at all. Depends on what brand name of coconut

oil you use...... I like Spectrum's " refined " coconut oil..... the unrefined

one has a strong unappealing taste but the refined one (yes, it's still healthy)

doesn't so much. My favorite is Omega Nutrition's coconut oil (or they might

call it coconut butter..... same thing)...... it has almost zero taste so you

can use it with all kinds of foods and it doesn't take over. You might have to

mail order to get it: www.omeganutrition.com but I find it at Whole Foods.

Coconut oil is solid at room temp.... melts at about 80 degrees.... and is great

for cooking with (sauteing, baking, etc)..... but it gets ROCK HARD in the

fridge, so store it in the pantry!! You need to go read up on the various oils

and get a better idea on the proportions of Omega 3's to Omega 6's and 9's.....

and which is which, etc. Again, I refer you to Udo Erasmus....

www.udoerasmus.com .

Yes, coconut milk is lactose free....... but it doesn't have enough fat in and

of itself to trade straight across for cream. You have to add oils to it.

Luckily, they mix in very well...... then add a tidge of sweetener and you've

got a yummy " pudding " .

On the probiotics, I would stay away from the one that has the FOS (that's the

fructo-whatever), if I were you. There's plenty of good ones out there without

it. You might want to check Custom Probiotics www.customprobiotics.com . I

personally would only use just plain acidophilus...... and I know they have one

that has no FOS..... and no other added starches. Once you find one you want to

use, then yes, you'd give it daily. Read the label..... but a person I really

trust has stated that the ideal is 3 billion live cells per day..... that you

don't really need any more than that. As with anything, start with a teeny bit

and work up...... watch your child and take cues from him/her.

PS...... no store would carry lactose-free yogurt..... but you might have seen a

few people here refer to it. That's the yogurt we make ourselves at home, for

those of us that are following the Specific Carbohydrate Diet. It's just a

matter of how long it ferments..... a full 24 hours...... which removes all the

lactose.

oils, coconut milk, acidophilus - Patti-anyone?

Am thinking about going dairy free for a couple of wks. to see if

there is a noticable improvement w/lethargy, seizure control, muscle

weakness, etc. and also experimenting w/dif. oils and possibly

coconut milk after reading a recent posting from Patti.

Have a couple of questions:

1.) Are most oils interchangeable (i.e. do I need to revise existing

menu's I have using olive/puritan or can I interchange

sunflower/flax/coconut?

2.) Is there a limit w/any of these oils I should use? I typically

give 2 meals w/olive and 1 or 2 meals w/puritan. Like I'm especially

thinking should I just give one meal w/flax and or coconut? I know

that variety is best but just didn't want to give too much of

something I'm totally not familiar with.

3.) When using flax/coconut - are there any foods that are especially

good to mix them w/? Especially the coconut - that sounds like it

might be strong but tasty.

4.) coconut milk - can this be used in place of heavy cream?

likes his cream diluted w/water - am afraid I'll have trouble getting

him to drink water (flavored or plain)so thought this might be a tasty

alternative. In addition - is coconut milk (by chance) lactose free?

Like I said - I have no idea what I'm getting into - just thought it

sounded good.

5.) My grocery store doesn't carry lactose free yogurt and have been

reading about the health benefits of acidophillus. I bought a

supplement awhile back but didn't end up giving it to him. Is it OK

to give this as a supplement (daily basis) or should I use sparingly?

I bought - Natural milk free acidophilus pro-biotic blent w/pectin.

The only thing - now that I'm reading the label - it says that it has

20mg. of Dahlulin PB which is fructo-oligosaccharides from dahlia

tuber and chicory root). Scared about the fructo whatever.

I've been sticking to basics w/this diet b/c I found that my son

appears to be sensitive to things like

carrots/broccoli/tomatoes/cheese. So, we typically give him

turkey/pork chop/chicken and spag. squash/zucc/or green beans. He

loves ALL food but I've been afraid to explore - at least until I can

wean all meds. Since we'll be med free this weekend - I'm ready to

try some alternatives and was just looking for some suggestions.

Think that's it for now!

YOUR HELP is GREATLY appreciated!

(mom to - 2 yrs. old and ketokid since 7/03 - will be

med free in less than a week!)

Can't speak to some of it but I can speak to flax.

Start with a very low amount (only a few grams per day) and go up

slowly. I am big fan of flax cuz it is a very healthy oil and also a

ketone booster for some kids but....it can cause tummy troubles if you

go too fast and some kids have not done well with it. I would

definitely, definitely try it, just beware, its great for some kids, not

for others.

Make sure you buy a reputable brand (like Barleans or Omega), that it is

refrigerated when you buy it and you keep it refrigeated - this is very

important. Do not use in cooking, it breaks down with heat so if you

want to add to cooked foods wait til the food cools a bit. Also stay

away from flax oil with lingans, although this is the healthiest, there

is a debate as to whether or not the lingans are digested or passed

through as fibre, but if they are digested they are a carb source. So

stay away from the stuff that says high lingan on the bottle.

Good luck
