Guest guest
Holy smokes, I didn't know they were around the world. WOW! You are right Ellen but I have to say the Easter Seals in CT wasn't like the one here in Boston. I think it had to do with location, funding, and plain old lack of experience of staff. They evaluated Patty in CT and openly said they had nothing for her. At least they were honest. That is something quite admirable. So even thought hey didn't have appropriate services they were still great. The one Patty is at now is just fantastic. No, it's FANTASTIC! Guest guest
My experience with Easter Seals was horrific. In their defense, they were very generous in offering my son " PICL " fund money, which is Partnership in Community Living. They asked what I needed and wanted most for my son at that time (it was a one-time grant) and they bought him a new bed and set aside money to pay for a year supply of " big kid " diapers. However, we had to have a one-to-one aide in order for my son to use any type of afterschool " latchkey " program and summer programs. We contracted Easter Seals to provide this service. Our first personal assistant asked me for a ride home the first day, saying she forgot her bus money. She then would show up late and many of the school staff members said she spoke very harshly with my son. Finally, she just didn't show up ever again. It took them 5 months to find a replacement and during this time, my son's special ed teacher volunteered to step in until we got the replacement. I don't know what happened, but shortly after the aide " quit " , the casemanager quit as well! When they finally found a replacement, she seemed okay. She was also a CNA, which was nice. I found out, though, from my younger daughter, that the aide was signing them out every day and taking them to Wal-Mart, shopping for 2 hours or more, every single day! All this when my son was supposed to be playing and interacting with his peers. She also was constantly on her cell phone. They hired another aide at the same time to cover the days that the first aide couldn't be there. The second aide was WONDERFUL- -an ex-teacher who took the initiative with my son in getting him to interact with the other children. When I asked that the second aide be my son's sole aide, they wouldn't allow it and she ended up quitting because she wasn't getting enough hours. I asked that the first aide be spoken to about her shopping sprees and cell phone time, and she quit shortly after that. We got another aide, a male, who seemed friendly enough and had some experience as he was an aide in a state hospital. Halfway through the summer program, he just stopped showing up! I finally told Easter Seals to forget it, and asked my mother to help watch him until I finished school. I hated to burden her because she cares for my 89 year-old grandmother, but she begged me to watch him because she hated seeing what was going on with him. I received a call from the Easter Seals director apologizing for the situation. The begged for us to continue our services, and said they would promise to find an aide that had experience and would be " right " for . Our final aide was a male. When I met him for the first time, he told me he was a " rising rap star " and hip- hop dancer with a record deal in the works. This made me immediately suspicious, not because of what he did, but because I knew he wasn't very serious about this job. He was great and full of energy and engaged in playing, but the school staff complained he was sexually harassing the other teenage afterschool group leaders and he was very disruptive with the other children in 's group. He butted heads with the sweet retiree who was my son's group leader and one day she came to me in tears, saying that the aide kept separating from the regular ed. kids and telling her " he can't " do anything. She had known my son for over a year and knew what he was capable of and was frustrated because, in her attempts to talk to the aide about his separating , he ridiculed her and was defensive and mean to her. He was another that was late all the time. I was in school and there were many times that I had to leave class 25 miles away and come pick up my son because he was late or didn't show up. He never called me or the school to let anyone know and when I called him, he would make up stories about things, when I knew he was doing things for his record deal. Anyway, sorry for rambling, but I have been hesitant to seek services here in Virginia because of my negative experience. It is such a shame that things aren't consistent within the same agency. If we ever return home to Hawaii again, I will never ever seek any type of services from them. The receive lots of public support in Hawaii from very large and well known companies, so I don't understand why they are hiring such inexperienced, unprofessional care staff. Unfortunately for me, they were the only providers of personal assistant services under the MR funding umbrella.
