Guest guest
Dear , Just wanted to congratulate you on your brand new baby boy. Did you use the midwives at Santa Theresa? I switched from Kaiser, Santa Clara one WEEK before Jordan was born, and was I glad I did. I had a wonderful birthing experience at Santa Theresa. We lived on St. and Third Street in downtown San . One month after J was birthed, we moved to San Obispo County. My poor husband still commutes up and back once twice a week; we thought he'd find work here quickly--HA! However, my heart skipped a beat when I read that your Doctor was Dr. Godley at Kaiser, Santa Theresa. My son Jordan, born April 2000, saw Dr. Godley for three months before we switched to Dr. Colburn at Kaiser, Pleasanton. After three months of conventional casting (below the knee, fiberglass) Dr. Godley told me Jordan would have the massive posterior medial release (pmr) surgery that we parents here all so much dread. When I asked about any other alternatives, Dr. Godley told me there were none; only the Japanese had a stretching technique; which had never been duplicated in this country. A friend advised me to take a look at Dr. Ponseti's website. Once I talked to in Las Vegas I high-tailed it to Dr. Colburn. He is nothing short of fantastic. I did not like Dr. Godley's manner. When he first proposed surgery for Jordan (after having assured me for the past three months that he expected to be able to correct Jordan's feet with casting), he refused to explain the pmr surgery to me. I had to have my husband come in for the next appointment, and then had to insist that he explain it to both of us. Of course, once I saw the pmr surgery pictures in the medical text, I was appalled. I had no idea the pmr surgery was so invasive. I wrote Kaiser and explained that I thought it was an outrage that Dr. Godley was not telling parents--especially those that asked about avoiding surgery-- that there was another Kaiser doctor, one hour north, that was performing miracles with the Ponseti Method. Kaiser's response was that Dr. Godley did not believe that the Ponseti method worked, and that Ponseti's amazing results had not been duplicated in this country. Several times, Dr. Colburn emailed Dr. Godley with updates on Jordan's treatments, etc. and never got a response from Dr. Godley. Just this past Spring Dr. Colburn told me he was seeing another of Dr. Godley's patients. My point-- it must be barely a year that he's been performing the Ponseti Method. Unless he studied with Dr. Ponseti as Dr. Colburn did, then I would be very concerned about my son's treatment. Far, far too many parents on this board have had their children treated by doctors claiming to be doing the Ponseti Method, only to find out when their children screamed and cried for weeks when moved into the FAB, etc. that their children's feet had not been fully corrected. All of us on this board advise parents to seek out only doctors certified by Dr. Ponseti. Those doctors certified are listed on Dr. Ponseti's website. A doctor cannot learn the Ponseti Method by reading about it in a medical text. It requires much finesse. Dr. Ponseti's wife told me at our last appointment in Pleasanton (Dr. Ponseti was there to observe the results of Dr. Colburn's Ponseti work--one of the ways doctors are Ponseti certified) that Dr. Colburn was as good as her husband. I thought that quite a compliment. I'm so sorry to tell you all this, but in good conscience I had to share this information with you. Please know that I wish you and your darling baby the very best. Email me any time! Eddie and Jordan (4-9-2000) 3 months conventional casting Corrected by Ponseti Method, Dr. Colburn , Kaiser Pleasanton Re: New baby boy with a right club foot, need advice! Thank you very much for the information. It seems as though vinegar is the key to shortening the time of soaking! The first time was very difficult, as we also had to take into consideration not getting his umbilical cord wet. Which we did. And we also had him circumcised. So soaking in the tub was totally out of the question. We soaked with warm wet towels which seemed to do nothing. Then leaned him over a tupperware bowl for 2 hours! I used small scissors, but daddy was so nervous he jumped at every 1/8 inch that I cut!!!! I think this week will be smoother. I just bought the fisher price 4 in 1 bath that has a removable sling insert (very soft). I'm hopeful that he'll be able to lay comfortable enough to sleep through most of the soaking time. He sees Dr. Godley at Santa Kaiser here in San . He is also the Chief of Orthopedic surgery. He's only been using the method for about a year, but I feel very confident he knows what he's doing. He doesn't like to use the saw on newborns, so that is why we are taking it off. Which, although it is alot of work, I couldn't watch it be sawed off!!! Too traumatic fo MOM!!! I really look forward to being a member of this group. There is not a lot of information on this method, or clubfoot in general. Plus there is no better place than to hear it from experiences of all sorts!!! Thanks again for your help, I'll let you know how next weeks removal goes! I think this week will go alot smoother. Guest guest
Hey , Congratulations on the baby. Our daughter was treated by Dr. Ponseti in Iowa. We soaked the casts off in the hospital with vinegar water. You already got some great suggestions, but one thing that really seemed to help was that my husband would squeeze the casts and kind of knead them until they were soft. Were were able to unwrap most of them until we got to the ankle where there was more plaster. Then the cast tech would cut them off the rest of the way. Guest guest
Thanks for the support. I think this site is wonderful. I've never been in a chat group, so I'm still learning how to navigate through the site! We successfully encouraged the cord to come off early. It fell off the day after we soaked him. It's fine now!! Did your daughter have to have her Achilles tendon cut or is that something that only happens in a few of the cases? mikeleslie2930 wrote: , Congratulations on your new addition. My daughter was born in october with bilateral clubbed feet. She is now in the brace full time. Oh i remember how hard it was soaking her with her cord on, it was awful. We got it wet we just drenched it in alcohol afterward and it was fine. We soaked her for 30 min. then my husband took blunt wire cutters and cut it off, the whole process of soaking and cutting took 45 min. I am so glad i found this site, i posted every week of her cast removal and pictures of the process. It is amazing how their feet change with every cast, the first cast removal especially. Now her feet when they are out of the shoes are pretty straight. It is remarkable how they have changed. It is so well worth the casting to get straight feet again. I was so thrilled to have her in her brace now. It doesn't bother her at all either. If you have any questions or just want to talk don't hesitate to email me. Guest guest
Thank you so very much, you are correct when you say that it has been about a year that Dr. Godley has been practicing the Ponsetti method. Guest guest
, Yes she had the tentonomy is what its called. Dr.Ponsetti said that all babies who are haveing the ponsetti method will get this, so if your doctor isn't doing it then he isn't doing the true ponsetti method. I dreaded it, my husband was in the room when it was done, i couldn't be in there, i had to go all the way out of the office because i was crying so hard for her. She was crying and it hurt me so badly. He took pictures of it. It didn't look that bad. Thru the day we gave her infant motrin for the discomfort, by the next day she was fine. Now you can't even tell that it was done, it healed up very nicely. > > > > We just had our son on November 25th. He was born with > a > > > > right club foot and no heel in that foot. Guest guest
Dear , Dr. Colburn performed the massive pmr surgery to correct clubfoot for seventeen years. When he first heard and read about Ponseti's method he thought it just couldn't be true (as did most of us, at least initially). Althought very sceptical, he decided to observe Dr. P at one of his clinics. He could not believe the amazingly straight, beautiful feet that Dr. P was producing with just casting. Dr. Colburn told me that there were several aspects about Ponseti's Method that he did not understand (he had read about the technique), until he saw it first hand. , there have been doctors who have studied with Dr. P a couple of times and could not learn the Method. To a genius like Dr. Ponseti, it seems so obvious. Apparently it is not so for everyone. Since Dr. Colburn began using the Ponseti Method--it's been about four or five years and at least 40 babies, he has not had to perform the pmr surgery for any of his babies. In fact he once made the statement, " I can finally sleep at night " . He is a podiatrist, and not an orthopedic surgeon. Unlike a surgeon, he treats adults of all ages whose feet have been crippled by arthritus, etc. after having had the pmr surgery years before. Surgeons see the patient one , and sadly 2, 3 or more times that they perform the various surgeries to correct clubfoot. They don't know the often poor outcome for surgery corrected feet. That's one of the reasons the P Method has taken so long to be adopted. If you want totally accurate statistics on Dr. Colburn , you can call his nurse Clara at . I wish you could talk to him on the phone. You would not believe how caring and genuine he is. He is one of those very rare doctors like Dr. Ponseti-- for them it's all about the babies, just as it is for us! Guest guest
Just to clarify- not *all* babies require a tenotomy. But a majority of patients do. I believe that the number is over 80%. In Iowa it is done as an in-office procedure that takes approximately 15-20 minutes per leg including the application of the cast. Some doctors (especially those new to the method/procedure) opt to have the baby put under general anesthesia, however. Hope this helps, & > > > > > We just had our son on November 25th. Guest guest
Thanks for clarifying that for me. I went by what Dr.Ponsetti wrote in his email to me, he said usually 5-8 casts and a tenotomy. So i thought they all had the tenotomy done. Sorry i didn't know some didn't have to have it. Dr.Bonar didn't use any anestetic , she said she didn't like to use it. Your right it is an in office procedure and it didn't take very long at all for them to perform it and put casts on right afterward. Thanks again (Isabella oct.12,2002 bilateral clubbed feet) > > > > > > We just had our son on November 25th. He was born > > with > > > a > > > > > > right club foot and no heel in that foot.
